Ronald Jones tweets that he wants out after Chiefs Kadarius Toney trade

Kansas City Chiefs running back Ronald Jones tweeted that he wants a release on Friday night, a day after the Kadarius Toney trade.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a bye this week, but they were still active. On Thursday, ahead of the Baltimore Ravens-Tampa Bay Buccaneers game, they acquired wide receiver Kadarius Toney from the New York Giants in exchange for a third round pick and a sixth rounder in the 2023 NFL Draft. This gives quarterback Patrick Mahomes an electric weapon on a relatively cheap contract, who was just drafted last year.

One day after the trade was reported, running back Ronald Jones appeared to ask the Chiefs for a release from his contract.

Jones spent the first four years of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who selected him in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of USC.

After a rookie year where he played in nine games, Jones became the team’s starter. In 2019, he put up 724 yards and six touchdowns on 172 carries. In 2020, he recorded 978 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 192 attempts. But in 2021, Jones lost the starting job to Leonard Fournette, and started in just 3-of-16 games.

This past offseason, Jones signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Chiefs. He has not played in a single one of Kansas City’s seven regular-season games, as he was designated a healthy inactive.

If this was indeed Jones’ intent with this tweet, it will remain to be seen if the Chiefs grant it. If so, it will be interesting to see which teams will be interested in bringing him in to help out their running game. Jones will be rusty, but he has talent.
