NFL quarterback rankings, Week 10: Justin Herbert slides

The Los Angeles Chargers are hampering quarterback Justin Herbert’s ability to sling the ball, and the result has been a muted season from the star.

Our 2022 FanSided NFL quarterback rankings go live each Wednesday morning throughout the regular season, and we use a sliding scale incorporating current and past performances, with the former meaning more as the year goes on.

NFL quarterback rankings

32

Malik Willis

Last Week: 32 Tennessee Titans

2022 stats: 141 yards | 40.0 comp % | 0 TD | 1 INT | 4.7 YPA | 6.5 QBR

Willis has elite traits, but he’s not ready to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

31

Sam Ehlinger

Last Week: 31 Indianapolis Colts

2022 stats: 304 yards | 61.5 comp % | 0 TD | 1 INT | 5.8 YPA | 34.2 QBR

Ehlinger got his baptism on Sunday in New England. Young quarterbacks typically play horribly against Bill Belichick, and this was another example.

30

Kenny Pickett

Last Week: 30 Pittsburgh Steelers

2022 stats: 962 yards | 67.9 comp % | 2 TD | 8 INT | 5.8 YPA | 36.7 QBR

Pickett needs to come out of Pittsburgh’s bye week and simplify his game. Fewer turnovers is the big key.

29

P.J. Walker

Last Week: 29 Carolina Panthers

2022 stats: 623 yards | 58.9 comp % | 3 TD | 3 INT | 6.9 YPA | 24.1 QBR

Walker is retaining his job after a disastrous performance against the Bengals. Against Atlanta, he should have time to throw. Let’s see if he can bounce back.

28

Mac Jones

Last Week: 26 New England Patriots

2022 stats: 1,140 yards | 66.1 comp % | 4 TD | 7 INT | 6.8 YPA | 32.1 QBR

Jones hasn’t looked good once this season. He needs to find his rhythm with New England at 5-4 and still very much in the playoff hunt.

27

Davis Mills

Last Week: 27 Houston Texans

2022 stats: 1,656 yards | 62.8 comp % | 10 TD | 8 INT | 6.4 YPA | 32.8 QBR

Mills doesn’t have much help around him, but this season has been an exercise in a few nice plays surrounded by a lot of ugliness.

26

Zach Wilson

Last Week: 28 New York Jets

2022 stats: 1,202 yards | 57.5 comp % | 4 TD | 5 INT | 7.2 YPA | 48.0 QBR

Wilson avoided turnovers for the most part against Buffalo (one lost fumble) and allowed New York’s burgeoning defense to win the game. That’s the formula.

25

Taylor Heinicke

Last Week: 25 Washington Commanders

2022 stats: 629 yards | 63.0 comp % | 5 TD | 3 INT | 6.8 YPA | 42.9 QBR

Heinicke made some bizarre decisions against Minnesota, including an insane 49-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Samuel. He remains a high-end backup.

24

Russell Wilson

Last Week: 21 Denver Broncos

2022 stats: 1,694 yards | 58.8 comp % | 6 TD | 4 INT | 7.4 YPA | 36.0 QBR

What will we see out of Denver’s week off? Wilson draws the Titans, who were terrific against the Chiefs. Can Wilson get something going and help the Broncos regain some dignity?

23

Daniel Jones

Last Week: 23 New York Giants

2022 stats: 1,399 yards | 65.0 comp % | 6 TD | 2 INT | 6.4 YPA | 58.2 QBR

The Giants are in a great spot this week. Off a bye, with Jones and Co. drawing the Texans at home. Ideal spot to get rolling.

22

Andy Dalton

Last Week: 22 New Orleans Saints

2022 stats: 1,385 yards | 65.3 comp % | 10 TD | 5 INT | 7.3 YPA | 49.7 QBR

Dalton was under pressure all night against Baltimore, but he also missed some easy throws, highlighted by a wide-open Marquez Callaway before halftime in the end zone.

21

Justin Fields

Last Week: 24 Chicago Bears

2022 stats: 1,322 yards | 58.8 comp % | 10 TD | 6 INT | 7.1 YPA | 55.1 QBR

Fields isn’t putting up huge passing stats, but he’s starting to show why Chicago invested a first-round pick in him. Great athleticism, huge arm, high IQ.

20

Aaron Rodgers

Last Week: 15 Green Bay Packers

2022 stats: 2,091 yards | 64.7 comp % | 14 TD | 7 INT | 6.6 YPA | 36.3 QBR

It might be time to consider where Rodgers is playing next season. If the Packers can’t win with him now, do they run this back in 2023 on a huge cap number?

19

Jacoby Brissett

Last Week: 19 Cleveland Browns

2022 stats: 1,862 yards | 63.9 comp % | 7 TD | 5 INT | 7.3 YPA | 61.5 QBR

Brissett has played solid football this season, and could put up huge numbers on Sunday against the Dolphins, who have one of the league’s worst defenses.

18

Marcus Mariota

Last Week: 18 Atlanta Falcons

2022 stats: 1,561 yards | 61.9 comp % | 10 TD | 6 INT | 7.8 YPA | 59.7 QBR

Mariota couldn’t have been expected to be much better this season. Nothing eye-popping, but he’s giving Atlanta quality play from under center both running and throwing.

17

Trevor Lawrence

Last Week: 20 Jacksonville Jaguars

2022 stats: 2,075 yards | 64.3 comp % | 11 TD | 6 INT | 6.7 YPA | 50.9 QBR

Lawrence got a much-needed win for both he and the Jaguars, coming back form 17-0 down to beat the Raiders. One thing to watch for? Can Lawrence start throwing and hitting on some more deep shots?

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

16

Jimmy Garoppolo

Last Week: 17 San Francisco 49ers

2022 stats: 1,691 yards | 66.7 comp % | 11 TD | 4 INT | 8.0 YPA | 47.4 QBR

The Niners are 4-4 out of their bye and host the Chargers on SNF this week. Garoppolo would be wise to hand off 50 times in this game.

15

Kyler Murray

Last Week: 16 Arizona Cardinals

2022 stats: 2,168 yards | 66.7 comp % | 12 TD | 6 INT | 6.0 YPA | 47.8 QBR

Murray hasn’t lived up to his contract extension. The Cardinals are 3-6, the offense has sputtered, and Murray is throwing for the lowest YPA of any quarterback who has started the majority of his team’s games.

14

Matthew Stafford

Last Week: 13 Los Angeles Rams

2022 stats: 1,928 yards | 68.4 comp % | 8 TD | 8 INT | 6.8 YPA | 46.0 QBR

Stafford has one hope: throw to Cooper Kupp. Otherwise, everything is ugly. The Rams are 3-5 and the offense is the main culprit. Only Matt Ryan has thrown more interceptions in 2022.

13

Jared Goff

Last Week: 12 Detroit Lions

2022 stats: 2,041 yards | 62.9 comp % | 14 TD | 7 INT | 7.4 YPA | 52.0 QBR

Goff was middling at best against Green Bay, but unlike his counterpart in the game, Goff didn’t make the game-deciding mistakes.

12

Derek Carr

Last Week: 11 Las Vegas Raiders

2022 stats: 1,880 yards | 62.3 comp % | 11 TD | 5 INT | 6.9 YPA | 58.6 QBR

Carr has to wear a good bit of blame for this season. Las Vegas has thrice blown 17+ point leads. That doesn’t happen unless the offense falls apart late.

11

Tom Brady

Last Week: 14 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2022 stats: 2,547 yards | 65.3 comp % | 10 TD | 1 INT | 6.4 YPA | 51.4 QBR

Brady moves up three spots for his late-game heroics. Also, Brady hasn’t played as poorly this season as some would tell you, but the unit around him has been a mess.

10

Kirk Cousins

Last Week: 10 Minnesota Vikings

2022 stats: 1,999 yards | 64.8 comp % | 13 TD | 6 INT | 6.6 YPA | 50.5 QBR

Cousins isn’t putting up enormous stats, but he’s playing solid football. The Vikings are loaded with weaponry, and the veteran quarterback is distributing the ball without horrid turnovers.

9

Dak Prescott

Last Week: 9 Dallas Cowboys

2022 stats: 591 yards | 66.7 comp % | 3 TD | 2 INT | 7.3 YPA | 58.5 QBR

Prescott and the Cowboys emerge from their bye week to play the Packers at Lambeau Field. Normally a tough game, Dallas should be frothing at the mouth with anticipation.

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

8

Justin Herbert

Last Week: 5 Los Angeles Chargers

2022 stats: 2,254 yards | 66.4 comp % | 13 TD | 5 INT | 6.4 YPA | 58.4 QBR

Herbert dropped three spots, and it’s largely due to his coaching staff not allowing him to throw the ball downfield. The result is a quarterback neutered of his greatest gift. Until that returns, Herbert is an elite talent with a good, not great, ceiling.

7

Geno Smith

Last Week: 8 Seattle Seahawks

2022 stats: 2,199 yards | 73.1 comp % | 15 TD | 4 INT | 7.8 YPA | 68.0 QBR

Smith is having one of the most unexpected years in recent memory. The journeyman has propped Seattle to a 6-3 record, on pace to eclipse 4,000 passing yards.

6

Joe Burrow

Last Week: 7 Cincinnati Bengals

2022 stats: 2,535 yards | 70.0 comp % | 18 TD | 6 INT | 7.6 YPA | 55.1 QBR

Burrow bounced back from a hideous performance in Cleveland to roll the Panthers. He’ll need to continue his ascension with a brutal schedule the rest of the way.

5

Lamar Jackson

Last Week: 4 Baltimore Ravens

2022 stats: 1,768 yards | 62.3 comp % | 16 TD | 6 INT | 6.9 YPA | 64.3 QBR

Jackson struggled throwing the ball in New Orleans, barely completing half his throws against a bad Saints secondary. Baltimore will need more from the passing game come January.

4

Tua Tagovailoa

Last Week: 6 Miami Dolphins

2022 stats: 1,980 yards | 69.9 comp % | 15 TD | 3 INT | 9.2 YPA | 80.2 QBR

Tagovailoa has turned into a full-fledged star this year. His numbers — despite missing most of three games — are fantastic. There’s a real chance he throws for more than 4,000 yards and 35 touchdowns at this rate.

3

Jalen Hurts

Last Week: 3 Philadelphia Eagles

2022 stats: 2,042 yards | 68.2 comp % | 12 TD | 2 INT | 8.5 YPA | 63.1 QBR

Hurts finds himself in the MVP race halfway through the season. The Eagles are 8-0, Hurts’ numbers both rushing and passing are excellent, and the schedule ahead is a joke.

2

Josh Allen

Last Week: 2 Buffalo Bills

2022 stats: 2,403 yards | 64.1 comp % | 19 TD | 8 INT | 8.1 YPA | 74.4 QBR

Allen needs to play better than he has the past few weeks. Four interceptions, two fumbles and a bad loss to the Jets.

1

Patrick Mahomes

Last Week: 1 Kansas City Chiefs

2022 stats: 2,605 yards | 66.2 comp % | 21 TD | 6 INT | 7.9 YPA | 75.4 QBR

Mahomes is the MVP favorite right now. After putting up 509 total yards against the Titans, he’s leading the league in passing yards and touchdowns.
