Jerry Jones reveals how Odell Beckham Jr. meeting went, what’s next

Jerry Jones spoke on how the Dallas Cowboys meeting with Odell Beckham Jr to assess his fit as a free agent went on Monday.

Odell Beckham Jr is set to make his free agency decision soon. Having completed his visits with the New York Giants, Buffalo Bills, and Dallas Cowboys (in that order), Beckham reportedly is going to decide on a team mid-week.

The free agent is coming off a Super Bowl win with the Los Angeles Rams last season. He tore his ACL in the big game after scoring a touchdown and has been recovering since.

Beckham’s connection to the Cowboys has felt strongest all along, but pure connection won’t get things done, even if his appearance alongside other Cowboys at the Mavericks’ game Monday night makes it look like a done deal.

Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones spoke Tuesday morning about how hosting Beckham went and gave some hints to what we can expect moving forward in regards to Beckham.

Jerry Jones speaks on Odell Beckham Jr’s visit with Dallas Cowboys and free agency decision

Jerry Jones was very careful speaking Tuesday morning, hedging all the way saying there were lots of variables at play:

That said, obviously the tone appears to be positive and it seems like Beckham likes the idea of playing in Dallas if the contract terms are right.

But as the conversation went along, Jones expressed concern since he hasn’t seen Beckham work out:

This is a definite turn from the highly optimistic tone Jones took on radio appearances previously to sway Beckham’s visit to Dallas in the first place.

A lack of a workout, reportedly, was the deal with all the teams. According to reports, it’s not all that unusual for a proven veteran to not work out for a team before signing. That said, Beckham is returning from an ACL injury, so it would be helpful to see firsthand that he’s physically fit.

Curiously, though, Jones wouldn’t even give a yes or a no in regards to whether Beckham can actually play this year:

That’s an interesting development, and it could end up being nothing whatsoever. But this, compounded with the lengthy delay for Beckham to be apparently in ‘game shape’ creates some pause with Beckham.

He reportedly wants a multi-year contract, so any team that signs him is hoping he’ll be a productive member for more than just year. Adding Beckham previously was thought to be a Super Bowl move, though, and that doesn’t really seem to be the tone Jones is peddling here.

Again, we’re really reading between some lines here, and this is far from hard reporting. At this point, we have just a few days before we find out where Beckham ends up, which should lead to further information on his playing status for the remainder of the year.

If he is to play, the Cowboys’ depth chart will be a lot stronger.
