Aaron Rodgers gives himself copious credit for owning Bears in century long rivalry

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers gives himself credit for his contributions to the Packers-Bears rivalry.

The rivalry between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears dates back to their first meeting in 1921 when the Bears, then known as the Decatur Staleys, defeated the Packers 20-0.

They have played an NFL record 206 games against one another, including the regular season and post-season. They have played in the same conference and division since the NFL changed to a conference format in 1933. They played in the NFL’s Western Conference from 1933 to 1970 and have been in the NFC North since 1970, known as the NFC Central from 1970 to 2001.

The Packers lead the series 105-95-6.

Both teams have had much success in the century-long rivalry. Combined, they have 22 NFL titles, the Packers have 13, and the Bears have 9. Green Bay has won 20 Division titles, while Chicago is close behind with 19.

Aaron Rodgers takes the bulk of the credit for Packers owning the Bears

The most recent meeting between the teams came in Week 13 of the 2022 season. Both teams entered the game tied for the most all-time wins with 786 regular season wins since 1920.

In the week leading up to the game, Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard stated that quarterback Aaron Rodgers would play against the Bears while dealing with a rib injury, as he needed to renew his ownership of the team.

Lazard is referring to when Rodgers scored a touchdown against the Bears in Week 6 of the 2021 season and shouted, “I still own you” to the Bears fans in attendance. Rodgers later claimed that the Bears fans had taken offense to his touchdown celebration, and he responded to them.

Rodgers did play against the Bears in Week 13, and the Packers came away with the victory and the record for the most all-time regular season wins with 787.

Speaking after the game, Rodgers commented on what the win meant to him:

“It means a lot…We flipped the all-time series, we flipped the all-time wins. I’ve had a lot of success against them, so I think in a few years you look back and you feel pretty good about your contributions to the rivalry.”

Rodgers now has a 24-5 record against the Bears.

In the 29 games against Chicago, Rodgers has had 64 touchdowns, and the most he threw in a single game was six in 2014. Rodgers also averages 240.2 passing yards a game against the Bears and has 6,965 in total.

With Rodgers’ success against the Bears, it is reasonably accurate to say that he owns them.
