Chargers fans come for Emmanuel Acho after ‘social media’ win over Dolphins
Chargers fans had a blast trolling Emmanuel Acho back for his “social media QB” comments after Justin Herbert defeated Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins.
Somehow, some NFL analysts think that certain NFL quarterbacks only look impressive in carefully-curated highlight reels on social media, even if said quarterback was once the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Justin Herbert is lauded for his ability to throw deep down field, and Chargers fans hype up their beloved quarterback on Twitter, but the team is 7-6 — and with the roster they have, it feels like they should have more wins.
Perhaps that’s the reason former NFL player and current NFL analyst Emmanuel Acho came for Justin Herbert and his devout fanbase, one that quickly mobilized to Herbert’s defense. Acho expressed his excitement for the game by praising Tua Tagovailoa as a “top 5 quarterback in real life.” Herbert, on the other hand, is a “top 5 quarterback on social media.”
Acho’s sauciness didn’t bode well before or after the game, especially since Herbert triumphed over Tagovailoa and the Dolphins 23-17.
As always, people on social media kept the receipts and shoved them in Acho’s face, but thankfully, the former NFL star had good sportsmanship about his controversial hot take.
Emmanuel Acho eats his words after Justin Herbert and Chargers fans prove him wrong
Everyone from NFL fans to fellow analysts criticized Acho for his unnecessary — and inacccurate comment.
Despite the negative feedback to his negative comment, Acho doubled down on positivity in a reply to a Twitter comment, reiterating that he knows it’s “just a game.”
“I love the energy and passion and getting fans to feel even more,” Acho said.
Even though Acho was gracious about his gaffe, fellow NFL analyst Mina Kimes just had to dig a little at Acho’s original comment.
If “Social Media Throw” isn’t trademarked yet, it’s quite the brand opportunity for the Chargers. For the rest of Herbert’s career, and anytime he or his teammates are doubted, it would be nice to remind critics what a “Social Media Throw” looks like.
And for anyone who missed the throw in question, it was a 55-yard reception to Mike Williams that only had a 31.2 percent completion probability.
If only every NFL team had a “top 5 social media QB.”
