NFL quarterback rankings, Week 15: Tua Tagovailoa is struggling

Our 2022 FanSided NFL quarterback rankings go live each Wednesday morning throughout the regular season, and we use a sliding scale incorporating current and past performances, with the former meaning more as the year goes on.

NFL quarterback rankings

32

Desmond Ridder

Last Week: NA Atlanta Falcons

2022 stats: 0 yards | 0.0 comp % | 0 TD | 0 INT | 0.0 YPA | 0.0 QBR

Time to find out what the Cincinnati rookie brings to Atlanta’s offense.

31

Tyler Huntley

Last Week: 30 Baltimore Ravens

2022 stats: 275 yards | 79.5 comp % | 0 TD | 1 INT | 6.3 YPA | 65.3 QBR

Huntley is in concussion protocol, which looms large as Baltimore must keep winning to keep pace with the Bengals in the AFC North.

30

Davis Mills

Last Week: 32 Houston Texans

2022 stats: 2,319 yards | 62.8 comp % | 11 TD | 12 INT | 6.6 YPA | 32.9 QBR

Mills played well in Dallas, ultimately losing late to the heavily-favored Cowboys. Now, a date with the Chiefs.

29

Baker Mayfield

Last Week: NA Los Angeles Rams

2022 stats: 1,543 yards | 58.5 comp % | 7 TD | 6 INT | 6.4 YPA | 23.1 QBR

Mayfield has perhaps his finest NFL moment last Thursday, leading a game-winning, 98-yard touchdown drive in the final two minutes to defeat Las Vegas.

28

Colt McCoy

Last Week: NA Arizona Cardinals

2022 stats: 2,359 yards | 66.3 comp % | 14 TD | 7 INT | 6.1 YPA | 51.1 QBR

McCoy is going to be the starter for Arizona as it closes out 2022. Not sure how enthused he is about the notion after the beating he took Monday night.

27

Sam Darnold

Last Week: 28 Carolina Panthers

2022 stats: 284 yards | 58.1 comp % | 2 TD | 0 INT | 6.6 YPA | 93.6 QBR

Darnold has a real chance to be starting playoff games for the Panthers this season. Wild times.

26

Brock Purdy

Last Week: 29 San Francisco 49ers

2022 stats: 461 yards | 67.2 comp % | 4 TD | 2 INT | 6.9 YPA | 70.6 QBR

Purdy is slowly moving up the rankings after a terrific showing against a quality Tampa Bay defense. Nice poise.

25

Matt Ryan

Last Week: 26 Indianapolis Colts

2022 stats: 2,875 yards | 67.8 comp % | 13 TD | 13 INT | 6.7 YPA | 45.0 QBR

Nobody has more turnovers this season than Ryan, and he was benched at one point.

USA TODAY Sports

24

Russell Wilson

Last Week: 27 Denver Broncos

2022 stats: 2,805 yards | 60.4 comp % | 11 TD | 6 INT | 7.1 YPA | 37.3 QBR

Wilson had the best day of his season on Sunday, and it still wasn’t enough. This is the way Denver’s year has gone.

23

Mike White

Last Week: 25 New York Jets

2022 stats: 952 yards | 62.0 comp % | 3 TD | 2 INT | 7.4 YPA | 49.2 QBR

Give White credit. He took an absolute pounding against the Bills and kept coming back. That’s how you win over a locker room.

22

Kenny Pickett

Last Week: 22 Pittsburgh Steelers

2022 stats: 1,797 yards | 65.0 comp % | 4 TD | 8 INT | 6.1 YPA | 45.1 QBR

Pickett was knocked out of Sunday’s action early on, but could potentially play against the Panthers. He’s been better over the past month.

21

Mac Jones

Last Week: 23 New England Patriots

2022 stats: 1,963 yards | 68.1 comp % | 7 TD | 7 INT | 7.3 YPA | 35.4 QBR

Jones is dealing with a bad offensive line and a dearth of weapons, but the Patriots still need more from their second-year quarterback.

20

Daniel Jones

Last Week: 21 New York Giants

2022 stats: 2,534 yards | 66.0 comp % | 12 TD | 4 INT | 6.8 YPA | 56.5 QBR

The Giants need a huge game from Jones on Sunday night in Washington. This is essentially a playoff game.

19

Taylor Heinicke

Last Week: 20 Washington Commanders

2022 stats: 1,444 yards | 61.8 comp % | 9 TD | 5 INT | 6.8 YPA | 42.5 QBR

See above. Enormous night.

18

Andy Dalton

Last Week: 19 New Orleans Saints

2022 stats: 2,252 yards | 66.9 comp % | 15 TD | 7 INT | 7.5 YPA | 53.1 QBR

Dalton hasn’t played poorly this year, but he’s also not elevating the talent around him. The result is the Saints being very disappointing.

17

Deshaun Watson

Last Week: 16 Cleveland Browns

2022 stats: 407 yards | 59.4 comp % | 1 TD | 2 INT | 6.4 YPA | 48.4 QBR

Watson has been poor the first two games of his season after being suspended the first 11 games of the campaign. The Browns must be hoping it’s only rust and nothing more.

The Tennessean-USA TODAY Sports

16

Ryan Tannehill

Last Week: 17 Tennessee Titans

2022 stats: 2,371 yards | 65.0 comp % | 11 TD | 4 INT | 7.8 YPA | 51.4 QBR

Tannehill needs to step up and have a big day on Sunday against the Chargers, who are banged up defensively. The Titans are reeling, and they need a veteran leader to turn the tide.

15

Aaron Rodgers

Last Week: 14 Green Bay Packers

2022 stats: 2,864 yards | 64.3 comp % | 22 TD | 9 INT | 6.8 YPA | 41.3 QBR

Rodgers is coming off the bye and drawing a favorable matchup with the Rams coming to Lambeau on a cold Monday night. Could be a big game.

14

Kirk Cousins

Last Week: 13 Minnesota Vikings

2022 stats: 3,358 yards | 65.5 comp % | 20 TD | 9 INT | 6.9 YPA | 53.3 QBR

Cousins has been solid this year, but the last couple weeks have been uneven. If the Vikings are going to hold onto the No. 2 seed, they need Cousins and the offense to cover for the defense.

13

Tom Brady

Last Week: 8 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2022 stats: 3,585 yards | 65.8 comp % | 17 TD | 5 INT | 6.2 YPA | 51.1 QBR

Brady had to drop. The YPA is hideous on a weekly basis, and the Buccaneers’ offense could easily be the worst watch in football.

12

Derek Carr

Last Week: 9 Las Vegas Raiders

2022 stats: 3,117 yards | 62.0 comp % | 20 TD | 10 INT | 7.2 YPA | 59.3 QBR

Carr had a tough night against the Rams, throwing two interceptions. That said, Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels did little to help Carr, running the ball constantly.

11

Justin Fields

Last Week: 11 Chicago Bears

2022 stats: 1,896 yards | 61.7 comp % | 13 TD | 10 INT | 7.5 YPA | 58.1 QBR

Fields’ passing numbers aren’t overwhelming, but the entire skill set is phenomenal. He’s the NFC’s answer — potentially — to Lamar Jackson.

10

Trevor Lawrence

Last Week: 15 Jacksonville Jaguars

2022 stats: 3,202 yards | 66.2 comp % | 20 TD | 6 INT | 7.0 YPA | 56.7 QBR

Lawrence has really stepped up over the past month. The Jaguars are 5-8, but Lawrence is driving most of the good vibes coming out of Jacksonville.

9

Jared Goff

Last Week: 12 Detroit Lions

2022 stats: 3,352 yards | 65.3 comp % | 22 TD | 7 INT | 7.6 YPA | 61.2 QBR

Goff is quietly having an excellent campaign. The Lions have won five of their last six, and it’s because the offense is rolling at an elite level.

USA TODAY Sports

8

Dak Prescott

Last Week: 6 Dallas Cowboys

2022 stats: 1,847 yards | 66.9 comp % | 14 TD | 9 INT | 7.4 YPA | 52.5 QBR

Prescott dropped a few spots after an ugly showing against the Texans. The Cowboys need him to be much better down the stretch for Dallas to have any shot of winning the NFC East.

7

Tua Tagovailoa

Last Week: 5 Miami Dolphins

2022 stats: 3,004 yards | 65.5 comp % | 22 TD | 5 INT | 8.7 YPA | 73.4 QBR

Tagovailoa has really, really faltered over the past two weeks. Going 10-of-28 against the Chargers’ defense is near impossible. Next up: Buffalo.

6

Geno Smith

Last Week: 7 Seattle Seahawks

2022 stats: 3,433 yards | 71.5 comp % | 25 TD | 8 INT | 8.0 YPA | 64.4 QBR

Smith has played splendid football all year, even if the superlative-worthy plays have dropped to an extent. The Seahawks are a viable playoff team, and Smith is the main reason.

5

Justin Herbert

Last Week: 10 Los Angeles Chargers

2022 stats: 3,706 yards | 67.6 comp % | 21 TD | 7 INT | 6.6 YPA | 57.9 QBR

Herbert had the best game of his season on Sunday, throwing for 367 yards in a 23-17 win over Miami. The Chargers are now in prime position to (finally) make the playoffs.

4

Josh Allen

Last Week: 4 Buffalo Bills

2022 stats: 3,553 yards | 63.8 comp % | 26 TD | 11 INT | 7.6 YPA | 73.2 QBR

Allen did very little on Sunday. Partially because of the bad weather in Buffalo, and partially because of the Jets’ defense. The most important thing, though? No turnovers.

3

Joe Burrow

Last Week: 3 Cincinnati Bengals

2022 stats: 3,685 yards | 68.1 comp % | 27 TD | 9 INT | 7.8 YPA | 59.8 QBR

Burrow won’t win the MVP award, but he’s playing like an MVP. The Bengals are 9-2 in their last 11 games, and Burrow has thrown only five interceptions over that time.

2

Jalen Hurts

Last Week: 2 Philadelphia Eagles

2022 stats: 3,157 yards | 68.0 comp % | 22 TD | 3 INT | 8.1 YPA | 70.4 QBR

Hurts has been brilliant this season. His performance in a blowout win over the Giants was nothing spectacular, but his body of work rivals anybody in 2022.

1

Patrick Mahomes

Last Week: 1 Kansas City Chiefs

2022 stats: 4,160 yards | 65.8 comp % | 33 TD | 11 INT | 8.1 YPA | 77.9 QBR

Mahomes had a very bizarre game against the Broncos. He torched Denver with 352 yards and three touchdowns — including an unreal hook shot to Jerick McKinnon — but also launched three interceptions.
