NFL MVP Update: Jalen Hurts Can Lock Up MVP with Win vs. Cowboys

There wasn’t a ton of movement in the NFL MVP award during Week 15 with the best teams in the league holding serve, but what does that mean for the rest of the season?

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles held off the Chicago Bears on the road behind 300 yards through the air and three rushing touchdowns. Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs won in overtime against the Houston Texans behind 336 passing yards from their quarterback.

The odds are pretty stagnant from an odds perspective, but here is the updated market with Jalen Hurts still the odds on favorite, Mahomes hot on his tail and the combination of Joe Burrow and Josh Allen standing as long shot options.

2022 NFL MVP Odds

What these odds tell me is that if the Eagles win out, Jalen Hurts will win NFL MVP going away. The Eagles will be at least two games better than the next best team with a 16-1 record with Hurts 10th in the league in passing yards and tied for the third fewest interceptions while also combining for 35 touchdowns.

If everybody holds form, how does Mahomes make up the ground? How does the narrative change? I struggle to see one.

So, will the Eagles win out? The team has a stiff test against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday on the road with an NFC East division title on the line. Currently, the Eagles are slight underdogs, and a loss can be the catalyst for a price shift (not certainly, but this can be the impetus for change atop the odds board).

If the Eagles win this game they will have the division wrapped up, as well as the No. 1 seed in the NFC. Maybe Hurts rests, but that may only strengthen his case as the MVP.

Mahomes remains in contention, and the team will likely be favored considerably down the stretch as the team sits behind the Bills via tiebreaker for the top seed in the AFC. The Chiefs signal caller leads the league in passing yards and touchdowns, so he has the statistical profile of an MVP, but does he have the team success?

This is shaping up to be a heated argument amongst people who follow the league and highlight how people view the award.

However, the odds indicate that if Hurts gets past Dallas, a high profile matchup against the toughest opponent remaining on either teams schedule, it should be smooth sailing to his first career MVP.

Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.
