Latest Patrick Mahomes feat puts him among QB royalty after only 6 seasons

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is already among the greatest quarterbacks of all time in regard to this statistic.

In just a short amount of time, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes solidified his status as one of the best at his position in recent memory. He did, after all, win the NFL MVP in his very first season as starter. Now, in 2022, he is among the favorites to win the award, with fellow quarterbacks Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles and Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals.

It should come as no surprise that Mahomes is making history.

After his Week 15 performance against the Houston Texans, Mahomes has recorded 35 passing touchdowns on the year. Now, he is one of five quarterbacks to ever throw for 35 passing touchdowns in four or more seasons. He joins Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, and Peyton Manning.

This statistic comes courtesy of Chiefs reporter Matt McMullen.

Patrick Mahomes now one of five quarterbacks to throw for 35 touchdowns in four or more seasons

Mahomes has thrown for 35 touchdowns in four seasons, tying him with Brees and Manning. He only trails Brady and Rodgers, who have accomplished this feat in six seasons.

Entering the season, the Chiefs were expected to have a drop-off in production. They did, after all, trade away top receiver on the depth chart in Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins. Yet, the move has worked out for both parties. This offseason, the Chiefs signed the likes of JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, while drafting Skyy Moore.

Through 15 weeks of the NFL season, Mahomes has thrown the most touchdown passes to Travis Kelce with 12. Trailing Kelce is running back Jerrick McKinnon with five, followed by wide receiver Mecole Hardman with four.

Let’s take a look at the full touchdown leader board on the Chiefs roster:

  1. TE Travis Kelce: 12
  2. RB Jerrick McKinnon: 5
  3. WR Mecole Hardman: 4
  4. RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire: 3
  5. WR JuJu Smith-Schuster: 3
  6. WR Justin Watson: 2
  7. TE Jody Fortson: 2
  8. WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling: 2
  9. TE Noah Gray: 1
  10. WR Kadarius Toney: 1

The Chiefs have three more games remaining on their schedule before the playoffs begin. They have the chance to gain ground on the Buffalo Bills for the No. 1 seed in the AFC, which would give them a first-round bye in the playoffs. Also, in that span, Mahomes has the chance to improve his MVP odds, now that Hurts is sidelined with a sprained throwing shoulder.

When it comes to this statistic of recording 35 passing touchdowns in a season, it may only be a matter of time until he holds the record, and it could be by a significant margin when all is said and done.
