Damar Hamlin’s uncle gives update on Bills DB from hospital

Bills DB Damar Hamlin remains at a Cincinnati hospital after going into cardiac arrest on the field but his uncle gave a positive update on Tuesday.

More than 24 hours after the harrowing scene in Cincinnati after Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field, had to be revived by CPR and receive oxygen, and then was stretchered into an ambulance and taken to a hospital, the NFL world remains hopeful and praying that there will be good news coming about the status of the 24-year-old.

On Tuesday night, Hamlin’s uncle spoke to reporters outside of the hospital where his nephew remains in critical condition, but did offer some positive updates on his condition.

Most notably, the uncle stated that Hamlin required 100% of oxygen from the ventilator in order to breathe properly. On Tuesday, that had been turned down to 50%, which means his breathing is improving.

Damar Hamlin update: Uncle says DB now on 50% oxygen, flipped on his stomach

Consistent with weaning Hamlin off of the ventilator as they work on getting him to breathe on his own, another update from his uncle was that the Bills defensive back had been flipped on his stomach in his hospital bed in order to relieve pressure on his lungs.

Though this is not a COVID-related incident, this practice was used during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic — called prone positioning — as it helps the lungs expand more to allow more air to get in. It can be used to help a patient begin to work towards breathing on their own.

As stated, the next step is to get Hamlin breathing on his own. It does appear, according to his uncle’s updates, that his condition is improving.
