Four teams have multiple players on Wooden list

South Carolina, Stanford, Iowa and UConn all have multiple players on the Wooden Award midseason top 25 list for the 2022-23 women’s college basketball season.

The Gamecocks’ Aliyah Boston, last season’s Wooden winner, headlined the midseason list, which was announced Wednesday. She and teammate Zia Cooke (also on the midseason list) led the No. 1 Gamecocks to the national championship last season and to a 14-0 record this year.

Four sophomores — UConn’s Azzi Fudd, Notre Dame‘s Olivia Miles, LSU‘s Angel Reese and DePaul‘s Aneesah Morrow — were also included, as was Iowa junior Caitlin Clark.

No. 2 Stanford was represented by Cameron Brink and Haley Jones; Monika Czinano also represented the Hawkeyes.

Twenty-one of the 25 players were on the preseason top 50; UConn’s Aaliyah Edwards, Michigan‘s Emily Kiser, Florida State‘s Ta’Niya Latson and Utah‘s Alissa Pili marked the only newcomers. Latson — winner of three ACC player of the week awards and all of the conference’s rookie of the week awards — is the only freshman on the list.

Many top players — including Fudd, Indiana‘s Grace Berger, Ohio State‘s Jacy Sheldon and NC State‘s Diamond Johnson — have missed time because of injury. While the status of others is unclear, Fudd has returned to basketball activities and could play for the Huskies as early as this week.

The Wooden Award will be presented April 7.
