Any hope for coaching change has been crushed for Saints already

Dennis Allen’s recent comments indicate Saints fans shouldn’t hold their breath on a coaching change.

Black Monday is here, and there have already been a few coaching terminations around the league to tack onto the carousel that started moving midseason. New Orleans Saints fans might have hoped to see some changes at the top after the disappointment that was the 2022 season, but early indications are that there won’t be a change… At least for now.

Nick Underhill reported on Monday that Dennis Allen seems to be safe, according to Allen himself.

Now, while Allen probably wouldn’t be in the know if he were getting fired, he also probably would have been informed by this point on Monday if he were losing his job. Allen has failed as a head coach (Raiders) previously, so he may have a shorter leash than some, but typically head coaches get at least two or three seasons to prove their worth.

That has not been the case around the NFL this season, though, as multiple first-year head coaches have been let go.

Only hope at a coaching change for Saints might be Sean Payton

While Allen is the de facto head coach for New Orleans next year until we learn otherwise, the Saints still own Sean Payton’s rights. Payton is already interviewing with the Denver Broncos and could obtain draft picks if a team wants to hire Payton.

Another possibility is Payton coming back to coach the Saints, however.

All indications are Payton is pretty happy with his TV analyst job, so it’s also possible the Saints don’t get their longtime head coach back or draft picks.

At any rate, Allen being back is not going to be something Saints fans will be thrilled about. The Saints finished 7-10 this year and missed out on the postseason. They were a disaster most of the year and fans questioned the reasoning behind not experimenting more with the quarterback position when Andy Dalton was clearly not working.
