Here's Where to Stream Elvis Online
Hollywood loves a biopic, and it couldn’t help falling in love with Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis. Starring Austin Butler as the coiffed music legend, the film rocked and rolled into theaters last June and emerged as a smash. It continued to attract buzz through the end of the year (earning over $250 million at the global box office) and, as we’re seeing now, well into awards season. Butler has especially received some love for his lead role, earning best actor nominations for the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and multiple critics associations.
Butler portrays Elvis Presley through his life and rise to stardom—with a focus on his complex relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). “He was punk before punk existed,” Butler said of the icon while speaking to ELLE last year. “He was rolling on the stage, spitting. We got to show what you don’t get to see in the [archival] footage.”
Though Luhrmann cast a wide net for the daunting role, he knew Butler was the one when he saw a video of the actor “in such a ball of emotion, playing and singing ‘Unchained Melody’ in a bathrobe at a piano,” he also told ELLE. “From that moment on, and every moment I knew him through the audition process, he literally lived the lives of Elvis,” the director added.
If you’ve yet to see Butler’s take on The King, you can stream Elvis on HBO Max, where it landed in September, 70 days after it opened in theaters. Subscription plans for the platform start at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year with ads, and $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year without ads.
