Why Lady Gaga Skipped the 2023 Golden Globes

Lady Gaga has kept a lower profile for the last few months, and the singer unfortunately didn’t reemerge tonight at the Golden Globes. Gaga does have a nomination this evening for Best Original Song, Motion Picture, for Top Gun: Maverick‘s “Hold My Hand.” But it’s a very competitive category, with Rihanna (“Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Taylor Swift (“Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing) among the other heavy-hitters nominated.

Gaga didn’t even post about the Golden Globes nomination on her page, although she did acknowledge the song getting two Grammy nods in November in her most recent Instagram post. “I am so honored to be nominated for 2 Grammys for ‘Hold My Hand’ and the Top Gun: Maverick Soundtrack with my fellow composers. It’s a real dream to be included in this celebration of music with a song and musical theme so close to my heart thank you ❤️ I fully cried, this never gets old and I’m super humbled,” Gaga wrote on November 15.

Gaga reflected on what the song meant to her at the end of April. “When I wrote this song for Top Gun: Maverick, I didn’t even realize the multiple layers it spanned across the film’s heart, my own psyche, and the nature of the world we’ve been living in,” she shared on her Instagram. “I’ve been working on it for years, perfecting it, trying to make it ours. I wanted to make music into a song where we share our deep need to both be understood and try to understand each other—a longing to be close when we feel so far away and an ability to celebrate life’s heroes. I’m so grateful to Tom and Hans and Joe for this opportunity—and it’s been a beautiful experience working with them. Me, BloodPop, Ben Rice and everyone else who worked on it with us are so excited to share it with you. This song is a love letter to the world during and after a very hard time. I’ve wanted you to hear it for so long. And I’m so excited to give it to you on May 3. ‘Hold My Hand.’ 🎶 But if you decide to / I’ll ride in this life with you / I won’t let go till the end 🎶”
