Steelers fans will hate Ben Roethlisberger’s opinion on Matt Canada

The Steelers offense was abysmal this year, yet Ben Roethlisberger thinks Matt Canada did OK?

Most Pittsburgh Steelers fans universally agree that the team’s offense was a massive issue this year, and that many of those issues can be traced back to the offensive coordinator: Matt Canada. Good luck finding many fans who would advocate for him to come back next year.

Well, we’ve found at least one… Former Super Bowl-winning quarterback for the team, Ben Roethlisberger.

On his podcast, Roethlisberger said he felt like Canada did, “great.” He also had this to say H/T Audacy:

“People talk about ‘get rid of him’ this, that and the other, but 7-2 down the stretch, found a way.”

Matt Canada’s offense was not good for Steelers… At all

Was… was Big Ben even watching these games? Or is he in on the pro-Canada propaganda the rest of the team has been peddling?

The Steelers averaged 19 points per game in the final six of the year, which would have ranked 10th-lowest in the NFL if that pace held for an entire season. If we zoom out to the nine games Roethlisberger referred to, that number increases slightly, but not by much. Moreso it was the defense that found a way to keep opponents from scoring.

Overall, the offense was poor in 2022. The passing game was abysmal, sixth-worst in yards per attempt and lowest (12) in passing touchdowns. The rushing game was fine, but the Steelers bested only the Indianapolis Colts this season in terms of total touchdowns.

Granted, the Steelers switched QBs midway through the season and had a rookie under center for much of the year. Still, Canada was a consistent part of the issue and deserves a heap of the blame.

It’s strange considering the relationship between Canada and Roethlisberger was always questionable at best when they worked together.

Sorry, Big Ben, Steelers nation probably isn’t riding with you on this take.
