This stat is further proof that Patrick Mahomes is the GOAT

He’s just getting started, but Patrick Mahomes just might be the GOAT when it’s all said and done.

This week, we may have witnessed the last of Tom Brady, whom many consider to be the GOAT. After a playoff loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Brady wouldn’t tell us his plans just yet, but that very well could have been the last time he walked off an NFL football field.

Looking to the future of the quarterback position, Patrick Mahomes takes on the Jacksonville Jaguars in his first playoff game of the season this weekend. Getting some well-deserved rest on their bye week, the Chiefs now look to begin their postseason quest for a Super Bowl.

Speaking of Brady and Mahomes, one might have a logical argument as to why the latter will go down as the true GOAT when it’s all said and done. Brady might be the consensus right now, but when you look at some specific numbers, Mahomes could get there.

In fact, there’s one number which already speaks to his greatness and as to why he will go down as the greatest of all-time. And no, it isn’t the record he just broke previously held by Drew Brees.

As CBS Sports points out here, Mahomes has more passing touchdowns than John Elway, Steve Young, Troy Aikman, and Roger Staubach.

After starting only his fifth season in the NFL, could Patrick Mahomes really be considered the GOAT?

It sounds crazy, but there’s definitely an argument to be made. Mahomes is only 27 years old and has already surpassed Hall of Famers like John Elway, Steve Young, Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach when it comes to playoff touchdown passes.

Let’s say Mahomes, realistically, plays another 11 years. That puts him at age 38, and he might continue playing beyond that point as well. But, if we put him there and do some simple math, Mahomes could be sitting right around 90 postseason touchdown passes.

Of course, it’s Brady, who now has 88.

We could dive into all the other numbers between regular season passing yards, touchdowns, wins, etc. But, the great ones win when it counts most, and that’s in the playoffs. There’s a reason Brady is currently considered the GOAT. He’s won seven Super Bowls. He consistently performed in the playoffs.

Should Mahomes continue at this pace, he is going to shatter most of the records held by Brady. So long as he wins a couple more rings, at least, this guy legitimately could go down as the one who finally surpassed Tom Brady.
