Everything Patrick Mahomes said about ankle injury after Chiefs win

The Patrick Mahomes injury scared every Chiefs fan in the world but the QB offered some optimism about his status in his postgame interview.

Even on basically one leg, Patrick Mahomes was able to lead the Kansas City Chiefs to a Divisional Round win and punch a fifth-straight ticket to the AFC Championship Game.

Mahomes finished the game but was out for most of the second quarter against the Jacksonville Jaguars after suffering an ankle injury. The ankle in question got rolled up on by Jags pass rusher Arden Key and put the quarterback in obvious pain. He finished that series but then was made to undergo evaluation in the locker room as Chad Henne finished the majority of the second frame in relief.

Out of halftime, Mahomes returned to the field but was clearly not healthy, despite playing relatively well. All that matters is that he got the job done, though, and the Chiefs will now play either the Bills or Bengals in the AFC Championship Game.

On the heels of Saturday’s win and the injury, though, everyone was waiting to see what Mahomes had to say.

Patrick Mahomes postgame interview on ankle injury: ‘I’ll be good to go’

Speaking after the game with Melissa Starks, Mahomes revealed that reports that he suffered a high-ankle sprain were a bit premature as the injury had not been officially diagnosed but said that the X-rays he underwent were, in fact, negative. He also said he’d be ready to play in next week’s game.

“X-rays were negative,” Mahomes said. “They haven’t diagnosed anything yet but I’ll be good to go.”

The Chiefs superstar also offered some clarity on his sideline reaction to having to go back to the locker room and an apparent argument with the coaches.

“They gave me the ultimatum that I wasn’t going back in unless I went in there,” Mahomes said.

All in all, Mahomes appears to think that he avoided the worst with this injury and that he’ll be trying to push Kansas City back into the Super Bowl next week.
