Eagles fans follow Empire State Building’s lead, take over MSG
A week after the Empire State Building shone Philadelphia Eagles green and white, the fanbase of the NFC champions took over Madison Square Garden.
The Philadelphia Eagles have had quite a couple of weeks. In the Divisional Round, the Eagles easily dispatched of the rival New York Giants 38-7. Then, last weekend, Philadelphia defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-7 to win the NFC Championship and advance to Super Bowl 57.
As if Philadelphia hadn’t tortured New York enough by defeating the Giants three times this season, the Empire State Building shone the team’s green and white. That caused New Yorkers, especially Giants fans, to openly criticize the building’s decision to celebrate their biggest rivals victory.
If you thought Philadelphia was done taking over New York, we’ve got some news for you.
On Sunday night, the New York Knicks hosted the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden. At one point during the first quarter, an Eagles chant broke out. In New York. Inside MSG.
Eagles chant breaks out inside Madison Square Garden
What a week for New York. First, the Empire State Building shined for the Eagles and used “Fly Eagles Fly” in their Twitter caption. Now, Philadelphia fans are chanting for the NFC champions at a Knicks home game!
And yes, the official Twitter account of the NFC champions spotted the chant.
Later on in the game, New Yorkers in the Garden did respond, this time chanting “Eagles suck.” New York did get the last laugh, as the Knicks defeated the 76ers by the score of 108-97.
When the Empire State Building was criticized on social media and on New York sports radio stations, the social media account was a bit combative. In fact, they are doubling down on the decision. The Empire State Building told the New York Post that they are a “global brand” and do not have a loyalty to local sports teams. Additionally, they told the Post that the building will shine green and white if Philadelphia wins the Super Bowl.
New Yorkers who root for the Giants are going to be the biggest Kansas City Chiefs fans for the next week, up until the conclusion of Super Bowl 57. The big game takes place on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m., live from State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
