Why Miley Cyrus Skipped the 2023 Grammys
Miley Cyrus’ new music era may be off to a prosperous, worldwide chart-topping start with her single “Flowers,” but the musician wasn’t at tonight’s Grammys ceremony for a valid reason. This year, Cyrus isn’t up for any awards. Next year, that could very well change, given “Flowers” and Cyrus’ upcoming album Endless Summer Vacation are being released within the eligibility period for the 2024 ceremony.
Cyrus has been vocal about her gratitude over the success of “Flowers.” On January 30, Cyrus wrote, “Celebrating ‘Flowers’ being #1 around the world again this week! I love that this record is connecting in such a positive way & it’s a pleasure to continue creating music for you. These milestones are only made possible by the listeners & my incredible fans. Endlessly thankful.”
The first week the song topped the charts, Cyrus wrote, “Thankful that Flowers is Number 1 around the world. This song is dedicated to my fans & the steadfast self love I wish for each of you. Forever grateful, Miley.”
Cyrus has not addressed fan theories suggesting that the song, which was released on her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth’s 33rd birthday, was about him and their breakup. But her sister Brandi Cyrus did allude to it, revealing on her and Wells Adams’ podcast Your Favorite Thing, “Miley’s new song, all the tea…and all the narratives that fans are making on TikTok. It’s so good. The song did come out on his birthday—was that on purpose? I don’t know. Can’t say. Genius, though.”
The narratives fans have created “makes Miley seem like an absolute genius,” Brandi added. “And it’s just too good.” After citing a couple theories she heard, Brandi confessed she couldn’t say whether there was any truth to them. “I’m not here to say that’s true and what’s not true,” she admitted. “Only Miley knows the truth.”
