Why Taylor Swift’s Boyfriend Joe Alwyn Isn’t at the 2023 Grammys With Her
Taylor Swift and her boyfriend Joe Alwyn have never walked a red carpet together. That didn’t change tonight at the 2023 Grammys, despite Swift’s four nominations. Swift walked the red carpet alone, dressed in a bejeweled navy crop top and skirt.
Swift is up for the Song of the Year award tonight for “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (The Short Film),” Best Country Song (“I Bet You Think About Me (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)”), Best Song Written for Visual Media (“Carolina,” from Where the Crawdads Sing), and Best Music Video (All Too Well: The Short Film).
Alwyn gave a subtle shoutout to Swift this week when he shared an Instagram Story featuring her cat Meredith. The couple of over six years has kept their relationship completely private.
Last April, Alwyn explained why he wouldn’t talk about Swift to ELLE UK. “It’s not really [because I] want to be guarded and private, it’s more a response to something else,” he said with a shrug. “We live in a culture that is so increasingly intrusive…. The more you give—and frankly, even if you don’t give it—something will be taken.”
His wording is quite similar to Swift’s own statement to The Guardian in August 2019.
On why she won’t talk about their relationship in interviews, she said with a laugh, “I’ve learned that if I do, people think it’s up for discussion, and our relationship isn’t up for discussion. If you and I were having a glass of wine right now, we’d be talking about it—but it’s just that it goes out into the world. That’s where the boundary is, and that’s where my life has become manageable. I really want to keep it feeling manageable.”
