Dak Prescott knows change is coming with Mike McCarthy calling plays

Dak Prescott anticipates some changes in the Dallas Cowboys offense with head coach Mike McCarthy calling the plays now.

Dallas Cowboys franchise quarterback Dak Prescott expects for there to be slight changes to the offense with head coach Mike McCarthy now calling the plays.

The Cowboys made the controversial decision to let former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore go after a second straight playoff debacle. Oh, he found work immediately, alright. Moore now gets to call plays for Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers offense. As for Prescott, he seems to be embracing the changes that are coming with McCarthy calling the plays. So what could go wrong?

Here is what Prescott told Yahoo Sports’ Jori Epstein recently about Dallas’ offensive changes.

“Right now, Mike told me [about] 20-30 percent change. I think, if anything, it’s things that need to be changed. It’s great to dial in, fix some things, get sharper and crisper. I’m excited.”

A positive outlook on the whole thing serves Prescott and the Cowboys, but concerns are there.

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott takes Mike McCarthy calling the plays in stride

No matter how you want to slice it, Prescott’s best attribute is how he conducts himself when being asked a tough question. Of course, he was upset over losing one of his best friends in the organization to the Bolts. Then again, Prescott is simultaneously happy for Moore, as this move probably helps him become an NFL head coach faster than if he were to stay with the Cowboys.

As for what the Cowboys offense could look like with McCarthy calling the plays, think back to the good, bad and ugly with him being the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. Under McCarthy, Aaron Rodgers became a bona-fide superstar. He won NFL MVPs and led the Packers to their most recent Super Bowl championship. Of course, that 2010 Packers team had an elite defense…

In theory, a lot of what made that 2010 Packers team so special can be replicated to some extent in Dallas in 2023. However, Prescott is not Rodgers, and that is way too big of a burden to place on him. Furthermore, McCarthy tends to fall in love with predictable passing patterns and abandon the run. Green Bay was never a strong rushing team under him like it is under Matt LaFleur today.

In short, the idea of leaning on Dan Quinn’s defense and putting even more of an emphasis on Prescott to make plays as a passer could get the Cowboys to somewhere they have not been since the Bill Clinton Administration: The NFC Championship Game. However, Prescott is more of a thermometer than a thermostat at quarterback. He will not change the temperature of the room.

Ultimately, perhaps a more tried and true offensive philosophy could serve the Cowboys going forward? They are at the tail-end of their competitive life cycle, so why not go for broke here? Either way, if it hits the fan this year, the next or the one after that, Jerry Jones will fire McCarthy and the Cowboys will forever remain a glorified hype machine under his ownership. Go for broke!

“Did it ever work for these people?” “No, it never does … but … it might work for us!” “Huzzah!”
