Patrick Mahomes coaching himself is a better solution than current Andy Reid succession plan
The Chiefs Andy Reid succession plan pretty much means Patrick Mahomes should coach himself.
With Eric Bieniemy leaving for the Washington Commanders, senior offensive assistant/quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy is expected to be promoted from within.
Rooney Rules be damned apparently, but the Kansas City Chiefs are going to do what the Kansas City Chiefs are going to do. Nagy may be a devoted Andy Reid disciple, but him potentially being Big Red’s successor in Kansas City is a recipe for disaster. Just ask anyone who live in Chicago from 2018 to 2021 (yours truly) what the Nagy era of Chicago Bears football was like. It was so horrific.
Although promoting Nagy from within to offensive coordinator is not the worst idea in the world, having him be the potential successor to Reid reeks of Jim Lambright and Fredi Gonzalez you are way too good for this desperation. I lived through the latter and I will tell you, “No! Just don’t. No.”
One way to avoid an unmitigated Kansas City disaster is to let Patrick Mahomes coach himself.
Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes should be a player-coach over another Matt Nagy promotion
Truth be told, Andy Reid is going to live forever. He will be coaching the Chiefs long after I start yelling at clouds outside of a local supermarket. Reid will win more games leading the Chiefs than Don Shula in Miami, Bill Belichick in Foxborough and Coach K in Durham. As long as he loves drawing up plays and hanging out with the guys in the locker room, Big Red is here to stay in KC.
However, do not be a fool and think Nagy is the second-coming of Josh McDaniels because he is not. The Chiefs have a quarterback who can throw the football a country mile, not one who cannot even average his wingspan when it comes to yards per attempt. By potentially naming Nagy as a head coach in waiting, the Chiefs are basically handing over the car keys to another Kliff Kingsbury.
Frankly, Kingsbury is a better long-term replacement over Nagy because he will let Mahomes rip it like he was ripping Silver Bullets during undergrad in Lubbock. Few people watched the Red Raiders raid air, but it was a cool 5-7 nonetheless. We really just want to be entertained at the end of the day. The Nagy Bears were about losing every single battle vs. the wind as humanly possible.
So let’s be semi-real with this. Why would we not want to see Mahomes go full-blown Semi-Pro on us? He has, and will have, more money than god. Only Warren Buffett will have more cash than him in the Midwest. He already owns part of the Kansas City Royals, part of Sporting KC, copious amounts of Whatburger’s expansion plans and the Las Vegas Raiders. Let him go all Jackie Moon!
When Mahomes is the player-coach-owner of the Chiefs, you better believe Kansas City will rock a Flint Tropics throwback. It will be confusing as hell when the Miami Dolphins come to town, but so will be trying to figure out why the Hunts thought Nagy was who should drive their Porsche QB. If Tom Brady tried to buy a team while still playing, this is how Mahomes could surpass The GOAT.
Let’s be real. There does not need to be a succession plan for Reid. If he retires to a life of Hawaiian shirts and cheeseburgers, then god bless Big Red! As long as Mahomes is still playing at his absolute zenith, then coaches around the world will abandon their families to coach The Ketchup King faster than you can say Corndog or Wasp. You have power, Kansas City. Don’t play desperate.
The Jackie Moon Chiefs would probably win 1.5 games annually over Kansas City Nagy nonsense.
