NFL analyst Larry Fitzgerald listed the Dallas Cowboys as a surprise suitor for Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers, but does it make sense?

Considering how Aaron Rodgers looked last season in Green Bay, it’s arguable just how much of an upgrade he’d be over Dak Prescott, and if that level of upgrade is worth trading for. Rodgers will cost Dallas at least one first-round pick, as they’re unlikely to want Dak in return given they believe in Jordan Love.

On Mad Dog Radio this week, Larry Fitzgerald dropped the nuclear option in terms of a potential Rodgers trade destination. While Jerry Jones has been intrigued with TCU star Max Duggan, that doesn’t mean the Cowboys are looking to upgrade from Prescott.

Mike Fisher of Sports Illustrated also dropped an interesting hint that Dallas is intrigued by Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud.

What a Cowboys trade for Aaron Rodgers would look like

So here’s the thing — there’s no way the Cowboys would trade for Aaron Rodgers without unloading Dak Prescott first. There would either be a third team involved, or Prescott would already be gone. Or, in the case I’m proposing, perhaps the Packers aren’t as sold on Jordan Love as they’re letting on.

In that scenario, Prescott is young enough to still lead a talented Green Bay roster to the postseason, and perhaps contend for the NFC North crown.

Alright, this trade would be a complicated one. Rodgers isn’t that much of an upgrade over Prescott, but quarterback is the most valued position in sports. So along with Prescott, Dallas would have to send over three Day 2 draft picks.

The conditions on the 2024 pick swap are simple — if Rodgers chooses to play in 2024, then Green Bay reserves the right to swap their fourth-round pick for Dallas’ third-round selection. The bevy of Day 2 picks is a win for Green Bay, as Brian Gutekunst thrives on undervalued talent.

Prescott would slide right in as the Packers starter, while Rodgers gets a fresh start for his final few years in the NFL. Perhaps most importantly, the Cowboys don’t have to give up any first-round picks.
