Seahawks could bring back familiar face to fill obvious defensive hole

The Seattle Seahawks need a linebacker and wouldn’t you know it, the Rams just put Bobby Wagner back on the free agent market.

One of the Seahawks biggest offseason needs is at inside linebacker and the most obvious pick to fill that gap just came available.

On Thursday, the Rams and Wagner mutually agreed to part ways, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

LA was looking for ways to clear cap space while the Pro Bowl linebacker apparently wants to compete for a Super Bowl.

When the Seahawks cut Wagner last year, no one expected them to be competitive during the 2022 season. Instead, Geno Smith helmed a winning season that ended with a playoff berth.

Now Seattle is looking to take the next step with Smith leading the way but they need help on defense.

That’s where Wagner could come in.

The Seahawks should look at reuniting with Bobby Wagner

He’s already a Seattle legend and now the Seahawks have some cap space to work with while looking like a dark horse Super Bowl contender.

Wagner didn’t skip a beat playing in Los Angeles, finishing the season with 140 tackles and 10 tackles for loss, including a career-high six sacks.

Jordyn Brooks tore his ACL in Week 17 after leading the team with 161 tackles. Even if he’s healthy for the start of the season, which is still a question, Pete Carroll’s defense could use the veteran presence of someone like Wagner.

The reunion would be welcome from the Seattle side. Whether or not Wagner would be on board after the way his tenure with the team ended last time is up for debate. He was not pleased with John Schneider or Carroll and their lack of communication, which may have succeeded in “burn[ing] that bridge.”

Any approach for Wagner may have to include copious mea culpa’s from the team first.
