Entertainment Tonight published photos of the pair kissing on a yacht during an Italy vacation. Carter was also by Cyrus’s side at the MTV VMAs, where she gave an emotional rendition of her song “Slide Away.”

On September 21, after about a month together, People reported that Cyrus and Carter had split, but were “still friends.” Carter later reflected on the romance in a November 2019 essay for ELLE, writing, “While it was short-lived, I’ll remain eternally grateful to my most recent relationship for opening my eyes to this unexplored part of myself, and for inspiring a new level of self-discovery and wonder at all the possibilities of life.
