Davante Adams is in the loop on next Raiders QB, even if it’s not Aaron Rodgers

Las Vegas Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler revealed that wide receiver Davante Adams is involved in the search for the team’s next quarterback.

The Las Vegas Raiders are in need of a new quarterback after they officially released Derek Carr from his contract last month. The team is in position where they can draft a prospect, as they hold the seventh-overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, sign one in free agency with the $46.3 million they have in cap space, or trade for one.

While meeting with the media at the NFL Scouting Combine, Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler revealed that star wide receiver Davante Adams will be informed of update in their quarterback search.

“He’s earned the right to be kept in that loop. Josh and I feel that way, by what he’s accomplished and who he is as a player and who he is as a leader on that team,” Ziegler said, h/t the Las Vegas Review Journal. “So, he’ll be involved in those conversations.”

Davante Adams will be kept in the loop during Raiders QB search

While Ziegler says that they will keep Adams in the loop, it will be himself and head coach Josh McDaniels who ultimately make the final decision as to who will be their top quarterback entering the 2023 season.

“Davante knows he’s not selecting who the quarterback is,” Ziegler said, h/t the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “But he’ll be involved in the process, and we’ll bounce some ideas off him. Ultimately, again it’s going to be the decision that we’re going to make, and he understands and respects that at the same time.”

This offseason, the Raiders have been persistently linked to Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Adams’ former teammate. With that information, it seemed like a fit. However, The Athletic’s Vic Tafur wrote recently that the Ziegler and McDaniels “apparently agreed that they won’t be in on the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes if he does decide he does not want to return to Green Bay.”

As mentioned earlier, the team could opt to go with the rookie quarterback route, as they would be in position to select one of the top four prospects at the position. Out of the four, Alabama’s Bryce Young and Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud are considered the most ready to start in the NFL, while Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson are considered developmental quarterbacks with high ceilings.

But, there’s also the free agent direction they can go in. Let’s not forget that Jimmy Garoppolo is a free agent, and McDaniels does know him well during their team in New England as quarterback and offensive coordinator, respectively.

Whatever Ziegler and McDaniels decide to do in regards to the quarterback position entering the 2023 season, Adams will know of their plans beforehand.
