Will Daniel Jones’ new deal push Kirk Cousins out with Vikings?
Rumors of what New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones could make on this next contract should have Minnesota Vikings fans concerned about Kirk Cousins.
When it comes to what New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones could make on the open market, you better believe Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins likes the sound of that.
Jones is entering his fifth season out of Duke. While he is coming off a strong fourth season with the G-Men, he is hitting free agency. This is because despite being the former No. 6 overall pick, he was not afforded the fifth-year option. Although Jones flourished in Brian Daboll’s offense last season, his first three years in the league were mostly hit of miss. He could command $40 million, and he wants even more.
If Jones could potentially earn $40 million annually, this could be huge for Cousins’ bank account.
Cousins may be older than Jones, but he is the far superior quarterback, top 10 in the league today.
Kirk Cousins has to love what the open market could offer Daniel Jones
This is very fascinating for a lot of reasons. Jones may have a great level of athleticism over Cousins, but the Vikings quarterback is the more accurate passer. Although neither is capable of fully overcoming their surroundings, Cousins did win in Washington (hint: That might be your path to $45 million, Daniel!) and has been a stabilizing presence in Minnesota for years. Of course, his team did just lose to Jones’ in the NFL playoffs…
Is Cousins worth more than Jones? Most definitely, but keep in mind that the Vikings still need to pay their best player, Justin Jefferson, who is now entering year four out of LSU. Even if Minnesota struck gold by drafting Jefferson as Stefon Diggs’ immediate replacement, there is no way the Vikings will be able to recreate that type of magic this soon. There is just no way, man…
Overall, it comes down to who would be willing to pay Cousins a premium to be their quarterback. Admittedly, he is in a great spot for him. It remains to be seen if he can do better than Minnesota and vice versa. Truth be told, some quarterback-desperate team would pay that type of money for Cousins, but keep in mind that the franchise is almost certainly in a worse situation than the Vikings.
Given that Cousins has already been paid handsomely, he may have to take a hometown discount.
