Could Packers replace Aaron Rodgers with Lamar Jackson?

Could anything happen in the NFL? Sure, why not? But the Packers replacing Aaron Rodgers with Lamar Jackson would be wild.

The Green Bay Packers look more inclined to trade Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets by the day. That is because they have a replacement in mind already in Jordan Love. But what if they pulled a 180?

Lamar Jackson is on the market, if the Packers want him. The Ravens placed the non-exclusive rights tag on Jackson, which means a team can sign him to a long-term contract, thus setting the market. The only price would be that of the deal, and two first-round picks sent to Baltimore. It’s not ideal, but it’s also what a premiere quarterback costs these days.

Packers: Is Lamar Jackson an option to replace Aaron Rodgers?

To put it short — no.

Green Bay already invested a first-round pick in Jordan Love, albeit years ago. So, by signing Jackson to a massive contract, they would not only lose cap space, but two first-round picks and the future of another first-round selection they made in 2020 NFL Draft. While Love wouldn’t be involved in any trade for Jackson, he sure as hell wouldn’t stay in Green Bay past his rookie deal. Any contract would commit to Jackson long-term.

Green Bay has two options — either keep Aaron Rodgers entrenched as the starter for as long as he desires, or finally cut the chord and give Love the reigns.

Rodgers has taken a meeting with the Jets, who flew out to meet him via private plane. New York’s best players tweeted, suggesting the Packers quarterback ought to join their crew. All of it is admirable, and it might be enough.

But in no scenario does it make sense for the Pack to turn around and invest in Jackson. It would make for great theatre, however.
