Packers CEO reveals worst-case scenario: Aaron Rodgers comes back

Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy revealed that there is a chance that quarterback Aaron Rodgers would want to stay with the team in 2023.

The Green Bay Packers are waiting for quarterback Aaron Rodgers to come up with a decision regarding his playing status for 2023. It’s split into three categories — returning to the Packers, playing for a new team, or retiring.

This past week, the Packers allowed Rodgers to speak to the New York Jets, a team in desperate need of a quality quarterback. With that, there are some that assume that it is a done deal that Rodgers will be joining the Jets. But, Rodgers still has to make a decision.

On Friday, Packers president Mark Murphy spoke during an appearance at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association girls’ basketball tournament and said that there is still a possibility that Rodgers returns to the team for the 2023 season.

Murphy confirmed that he did give the Jets permission to speak with Rodgers earlier this week.

Members of the Jets organization flew out to California to speak with the quarterback in California. Notable Jets players such as Sauce Gardner and Breece Hall were recruiting Rodgers on social media. Then, after the meeting, ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported that the Jets are optimistic that they are “on the brink” of acquiring Rodgers from the Packers.

If Rodgers were to decide that he doesn’t want to play for Green Bay, then the team would pivot to Jordan Love. After all, they traded up in the 2020 NFL Draft to select him out of Utah State to eventually be Rodgers’ successor. Love has received plenty of praise from those in the Packers organization this offseason, and Murphy was the latest to heap praise on the young quarterback, who is under contract for one more season as of now (prior to May 1 fifth-year option deadline).

“We have a lot of confidence in him,” Murphy said, h/t NFL.com. “We drafted him and developed him. A lot of credit goes to our coaches and to Jordan. But we do think he’s ready.”

The Packers, much like the Jets, fans of both teams, and the entire league await Rodgers’ decision. When that happens is anyone’s guess, but the quarterback did say during an appearance on the “Aubrey Marcus podcast” that a decision could come “soon enough.”
