Ben Roethlisberger molding nephew of former Steelers teammate into a QB prospect
Ben Roethlisberger is playing a part in helping his former Pittsburgh Steelers teammate’s nephew learn how to play some quarterback.
When it comes to learning how to play quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger is keeping it in the Pittsburgh Steelers family … sort of.
During Mike Pouncey’s retirement ceremony at the Miami Dolphins‘ facility, his twin brother and Roethlisberger’s former center Maurkice Pouncey spoke about how Big Ben is getting involved in his nephew’s growing love of football. Despite the Pouncey Twins being former star offensive linemen in the league for over a decade, the youngest Pouncey is learning to play quarterback.
“Mike does the travel football team. His son’s the star quarterback, man. He ain’t playing o-line, so he better be able to throw that football for sure. Big Ben told him – he taught him as soon as we retired, he told him to put the quarter in the pocket. So that’s his little tip for him to make it down the line.”
Roethlisberger is a two-time Super Bowl champion and a top-15 quarterback in NFL history.

First of all, it is great that the Pouncey Twins are looking at ways of giving back to the community in terms of football in the state of Florida. Their names carry gravitas not just regionally, but nationally. Having Big Ben be so closely tied to one of them professionally is just an added bonus in all this. The wealth of knowledge these three men cannot be overstated. Good for giving back.
As all three former stars are seemingly enjoying the first few years of retirement, it feels like football is always going to be part of their lives. Roethlisberger is doing dad things these days, but has kept up with the sport and talks about it on the regular on his podcast. Coaching could be in his future, but Roethlisberger’s next football career is probably in media, potentially as an analyst.
Overall, it is pretty cool that the Pounceys are giving their son and nephew a big leg up on what it takes to be a quarterback. Of course, nothing will be handed to him. Keep in mind that native Ohioan Roethlisberger did not get recruited by Ohio State. He went on to be arguably the greatest player in Miami RedHawk history. Pouncey’s nephew will need to develop some of Big Ben’s grit.
Maybe one day the littlest Pouncey will be playing in the league his dad and uncle once starred in?
