NFL Rumors: Packers backing off on Jets’ gold, Trey Lance rumors get gasoline, and surprise QB hunter in the grass
The whispers going around the league right now are about the ongoing Packers-Jets trade talks, the 49ers’ messy situation with Trey Lance, and a surprise candidate in the 2023 NFL Draft quarterback sweepstakes.
What NFL rumor rumblings are going on today?
The biggest asteroid still set to hit the league is the Aaron Rodgers impending trade as the Packers and Jets continue to negotiate a fair deal for both sides. At this point, the question isn’t if but when, and should one team starts to budge, it’ll probably be Green Bay.
On the West Coast, San Francisco has to contend with a perhaps too crowded quarterback room and are keeping their voicemail inboxes open this offseason. And finally, which surprise team is lurking in the grass looking for a quarterback in this year’s draft?
Here are three of the biggest NFL rumors.
NFL Rumors: 49ers are pouring gasoline on Trey Lance speculation
The San Francisco 49ers are flat-out refusing to close doors this offseason. They didn’t clear any doubts whatsoever in their latest spiel on Trey Lance after rumors of his potential trade started to surface.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that they would “listen” to any trade as the San Francisco brass share the central focus of making the team the best it can be. With Brock Purdy touted to be the team’s go-to starter if he’s healthy, 2021 first-rounder Lance has taken a backseat; San Francisco also brought in ex-Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold to round out the quarterback room.
Shanahan said:
“Brock played eight games and won all of them and played at an extremely high level. We believe Trey can be that. I think he would’ve done it last year if he had stayed healthy. The good thing for him is with Brock being hurt and stuff, he has an opportunity to try and regain that.”
Based on his comments, the starting job seems like Purdy’s to lose and Lance’s to earn.
After last season’s unforeseen quarterback plague, it’s easy to see why the 49ers would keep Lance around, but at the same time, Shanahan is basically telling teams to hit him with their best offer.
