Packers rumors: 3 players who won’t be on the roster after NFL Draft
The Packers’ roster is going to look much different after the 2023 NFL Draft
So far, the offseason has been fairly uneventful for the Green Bay Packers. It has mostly been dominated by the Aaron Rodgers, New York Jets saga that has yet to give us an ending one way or another.
Regardless of what happens there, the Packers will be in for some changes in the coming weeks. The 2023 NFL Draft is coming up in just three short weeks, and Green Bay enters that weekend with plenty of needs within their roster.
Head coach Matt Lafleur is undoubtedly preparing for life without his star quarterback, but there are other needs that need meeting as well.
Specifically, there are some positions that will be totally overhauled. That also means some players currently filling those positions are going to end up off the roster in the end. Right now, it’s pretty easy to see the path to waivers for three particular Packers after the draft is over.
Packers players who won’t be on the roster after 2023 NFL Draft: Nick Guggemos, TE
The tight end position is one that the Packers have to address during the draft. Former starter Robert Tonyan signed with the division rival Chicago Bears, leaving just fourth-year pro and former third-round pick, Josiah Deguara, as the de facto starter.
Deguara hasn’t shown nearly enough in his first three seasons to be crowned the undisputed starter at the position. In addition, he’s only 6-foot-2 and the Packers need to add more size, along with sheer talent, to the tight end group.
Currently third on the depth chart is former undrafted tight end Nick Guggemos, a 6-foot-5 tight end from Eden Prairie, MN. He has yet to take the field in a regular season game, and at this point serves no more than just a camp body if he survives until then.
But, chances are, the Packers will draft a tight end, moving Guggemos to fourth on the depth chart, at best, and could wind up parting with him.
