NFL Mock Draft: 3 first-round mistakes Chiefs can’t afford to make

The Kansas City Chiefs need to avoid these draft mistakes if they want to keep their dynasty rolling in the right direction.

With Patrick Mahomes leading the way, it’s easy to assume the Chiefs will keep on winning games at a searing rate for years to come. But any team looking to keep a dominant streak alive needs to keep making savvy moves to avoid falling off a cliff.

For Kansas City, the draft is key. Every great team has the right mix of stars, veterans, role players and talented-but-affordable players on rookie deals.

There’s an art to making the right moves. But it’s equally important to avoid the wrong ones.

Here’s a look at the three NFL Draft mistakes the Chiefs need to avoid this year.

3. Chiefs can’t afford to stay still in the NFL Draft

The Chiefs are slated to select last in the first round in 2023 with pick No. 31 (the Dolphins had to forfeit their first rounder, which is why it’s not No. 32).

They could stay there and see who comes to them. Or they could trade up.

Not trading up would be a mistake.

Kansas City has 10 draft picks in total this year, two of them from the trade sending Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins.

At the same time, they don’t have a ton of room on the roster. This isn’t a rebuilding team. They’ve got a bunch of pieces that just won them the Super Bowl and they’re looking to run it back.

So what’s the point of making all those picks especially four across the sixth and seventh rounds, if those players are unlikely to make the team in the first place?

The Chiefs should do everything in their power to move up from No. 31 to get the most bang for their buck in the first round.
