Chiefs content to let Broncos scrub do all the talking

A Broncos wideout unleashed his pent-up rage at his AFC West rivals, and he had some particularly harsh words for the Chiefs.

When you’ve won two Super Bowls in the past four years, you stop caring what others think of you. Everybody knows that that oft-repeated saying, “Actions speak louder than words”. Well, so do trophies. And after last season’s championship, the Kansas City Chiefs are on the top of the world.

Can you really fault them for getting a little cocky?

Denver Broncos wideout Tim Patrick can. He made an appearance on the Broncos Avenue podcast this month and let out his frustrations at two divisional rivals, the Las Vegas Raiders and the Chiefs.

Patrick said:

“I don’t like either of them, honestly. They both do it in different ways. The Chiefs do it in a cocky way. They have every right to be cocky, but to be cocky and not good, it rubs me the wrong way… I’m not a fan of the Raiders. I’m not a fan of the Chiefs. [The] Chiefs are cocky little sh**s.”

The venomous attacks toward the Raiders is completely understandable. The entire league, sans Las Vegas of course, sides with Patrick on that opinion.

Broncos WR Tim Patrick is sick and tired of getting beaten by the Chiefs, and it shows

But it sounds like Patrick could use some therapy regarding his deep-seated hatred of the Chiefs and their “cockiness.” It probably has to do with the fact that Kansas City remains undefeated against the Broncos since Week 2 of the 2015 season, when Peyton Manning was still in Denver. How do we think that made Patrick feel?

For as long as the Chiefs continue climbing toward its dynasty throne, the franchise has no problem with Patrick and the rest of the AFC West peons running their mouths. Kansas City might even pity Patrick for having to play with Russell Wilson for the foreseeable future, though Broncos head coach Sean Payton may yet be able to turn the ship around.

Patrick missed the 2022 season due to a torn ACL and should return to full health in his fifth season in Denver, joining an elite receiver corps that includes Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy.

By contrast, the Chiefs saw two of their top-performing wideouts, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman, leave earlier this offseason; their starting lineup currently looks like: Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Kadarius Toney, and Skyy Moore.

Expect Andy Reid to make a few changes to the pass-catching corps by the time September comes around. In the meantime, Patrick will need all the reps with Russ that he can get.

The Chiefs are no stranger to trash talk and at this point may even welcome it — just know it could end up as bulletin board material for Mahomes and Co. in what should be another championship-contending season in 2023.

Best of luck to Patrick and the rest of the Broncos as they try not to become a division doormat again.
