Chiefs rumors: Insider drops optimistic outlook for blockbuster trade

The Kansas City Chiefs are in need of a wide receiver this offseason, and one NFL insider provided an optimistic update on landing one particular player off the trading block.

The Kansas City Chiefs won their second Super Bowl title in four years, and look to be in pretty decent shape to keep their contention window open. But it never hurts to make some big additions to their roster to make their chase to a Super Bowl that much easier. When looking at one area that could stand to be bolstered, wide receiver stands out quite a bit. Could they have a blockbuster move in mind?

The MMQB’s Albert Breer was asked during the latest edition of his mailbag about when he will announce a DeAndre Hopkins trade to the Chiefs. While Breer said that would be “no announcements from me yet,” he expressed his belief that the Chiefs would make a move to add Hopkins, but if the price is right.

“But I think at the right price, the Chiefs would absolutely work to get DeAndre Hopkins aboard. The question, to me, really amounts to how far down Hopkins is willing to come from his $19.45 million number for this year. He’ll be 31 in June, and he could take less on a one-year deal to chase a ring with Patrick Mahomes and, potentially, set himself up for one last bite of the financial apple in 2024.”

Chiefs fans given optimistic update on DeAndre Hopkins trade chances

Since Hopkins was allowed to seek a trade by the Arizona Cardinals, the team’s asking price of a second-round pick plus more was not met. One of the reasons is due to the fact that, as Breer points out, Hopkins is owed $19.45 million in salary this upcoming season. He is also turning 31 years old and played just 19 years the past two years.

As for the Chiefs, they have watched wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster leave for the New England Patriots after one year with them. So, there is an opening that they could use to address his absence. While there is the NFL Draft, where the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes seemingly have their eyes set on one prospect in particular, Hopkins does bring the name value.

Last season, Hopkins recorded 64 receptions for 717 yards and three touchdowns on 96 targets in nine games.

With the NFL Draft taking place in Kansas City from Apr. 27 until Apr. 29, Chiefs fans are wondering if they have some big plans to further improve the roster.
