Jerry Jones just threw Mike McCarthy all the way under the bus
Jerry Jones made a joke at the expense of head coach Mike McCarthy but Cowboys fans have been through way too much to find it that funny.
Jerry Jones has been the owner and general manager of the Cowboys since 1989. While he delivered three Super Bowl victories in the first seven years of his control, Dallas hasn’t been back to the NFC Championship Game since 1996.
In the last 27 years, the Cowboys have won exactly five playoff games, never making it past the divisional round.
There’s not another GM on the planet who could get away with more than two decades of playoff futility. Jones, who employs himself, is the lone exception.
So maybe he should save his jokes like, “Drafting is not our problem, coaching is.”
Jerry Jones threw Mike McCarthy under the bus with pre-draft joke
Jones dropped that line as a mic drop for the Cowboys pre-draft press conference on Monday.
Ha ha, Jerry. Good one. So funny. Much comedy. Punching down at the guy you’re probably going to fire in the not-too-distant future because you won’t fire yourself is great stuff.
Lest we forget who hired Jason Garrett and employed him for a decade before finally putting him out of his misery because coaching was the problem and everyone but the owner seemed to realize it.
Yeah, Jones was joking, obviously. It’s just easier to take a joke when there’s no baggage behind it.
McCarthy went 6-10 in his first season at the helm but he’s produced two 12-win seasons in a row.
This past season, the Cowboys bested the Buccaneers in the Wild Card Game for McCarthy’s first playoff win as the Cowboys head coach. They couldn’t overcome the 49ers in the Divisional Round, however, ending their season with a 19-12 loss.
The goal in 2023, as always, is to take the next step and actually contending for the Super Bowl.
