Why Selena Gomez Skipped the 2023 Met Gala
Even after four years away, Selena Gomez didn’t make it to the evening’s Met Gala in New York City. While Gomez was active on social media earlier today to promote Rare Beauty and Wondermind, she wasn’t photographed on the Met Gala red carpet. In fact, Gomez was photographed out a week ago in Hollywood—far from Manhattan.
Gomez had been grabbing dinner with her little sister then. The sighting confirmed that while Gomez was in New York recently to shoot her TV series Only Murders in the Building‘s third season, she left the city after it wrapped to take a break.
Gomez spent the first few months of 2023 in New York for Only Murders in the Building, which she films there with co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short. Gomez marked the end of the third season’s production by sharing a photo with this season’s guest star, Meryl Streep, on her Instagram.
“Well we wrapped season 3 of @onlymurdershulu -I’m not sure I have enough words to explain just how beautiful this season has been,” Gomez wrote. “It has been deliriously hilarious, challenging and for me, an absolute dream. I’ll post more soon. But I’ll I leave it with the woman I adore, look up to and love. 🥰”
Gomez last attended the Met Gala in 2018. She called her tan, which went viral at the time, one of her most memorable beauty disasters in an interview published last February in Glamour UK.
“While I was getting ready for the Met Gala a few years ago, we put on a bit of tanning lotion and it looked beautiful, but as the night went on it kept getting darker and darker,” she recalled. “When I sat down [inside the event], I saw a photo of myself, and it looked completely orange. And here I am at this prestigious event. My first thought was, ‘I have to get out of here!’”
She actually shared security footage of herself leaving on the night of the Met Gala on her Instagram. “Me when I saw my pictures from MET 🤷🏽♀️,” she captioned it.
