Taylor Swift Says Ice Spice Reached Out to Her About Collaborating On 'Karma'

With the release of the “Karma” collab between Taylor Swift and Ice Spice, Swift talked a little bit about how it came to be and her admiration for the young rapper in an interview with Spotify.

“Collaborating with Ice Spice on ‘Karma’ was one of the most natural things,” said the Midnights artist. “She reached out through her team, just kind of saying, ‘Hey, you know, Ice has been a big fan of Taylor’s since she was a little kid, we’d love to collaborate if that was ever something that came about.’ And I had been listening to her nonstop, like, getting ready for my tour I was just listening to Ice Spice constantly. So I immediately got her number and said, ‘Hey would you want to do your version of ‘Karma,’ do you relate to this?’ And so she jumped in headfirst.”

Swift added, “Getting to know her has been so special because I’m blown away by her. She is, in my opinion, she is the one to watch. Just watching her work ethic and how thoughtfully she approaches her work.”

Swift announced the remix on May 24, writing on Twitter, “Um. SO much to tell you. I’m a massive fan of this brilliant artist and after getting to know her I can confirm: she is THE ONE to watch.”

Fans of Ice Spice and Swift are definitely excited for the song’s release, but a number of people are skeptical of the timing. Swift is currently dating The 1975’s Matt Healy. Ice Spice told Elle in January that she has always been a fan of his band, which was brought up when Healy made an appearance on The Adam Freidland Show. During the podcast, Healy, Friedland, and co-host Nick Mullen called Ice Spice “chubby,” speculated about her ethnicity, and spoke in racist faux Chinese and Hawaiian accents.

While performing in New Zealand in April, Healy offered an apology of sorts, though he says his comments were misconstrued.

“I just feel a bit bad, and I’m kind of a bit sorry if I’ve offended you,” Healy said. “Ice Spice, I’m sorry. It’s not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued. It’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a d-ck. I love you, Ice Spice. I’m so sorry.”

The story was circulating again recently just as the collab between Swift and Ice Spice was announced.
