Women: Estrada continues domination; Enriquez wins, moves up
Seniesa Estrada held on to her WBC and WBA strawweight belts Friday night and, in doing so, may have set up the undisputed title fight she’s been waiting for.
Estrada, ESPN’s No. 1 strawweight, defeated Leonela Yudica by unanimous decision in Las Vegas — a fight that appeared to be one of the toughest of her career — and retained the top spot in the division.
It was the third straight decision win for Estrada (25-0, 9 KO), who last had a stoppage in 2021. It was the second loss in three fights for Yudica (19-2-3, 1 KO), who debuted at strawweight after an almost nine-year reign as the IBF flyweight champion.
Next up for Estrada could be a bout with Yokasta Valle, the No. 2 fighter at strawweight and the IBF and WBO titleholder, for the undisputed championship.
At junior flyweight, Tania Enriquez knocked out previously-unbeaten Cecilia Nino Rodriguez (10-1-1, 5 KO) in the first round in Tijuana, Mexico. The win moved the 26-year-old Enriquez (21-1, 10 KO) to No. 4 in the junior flyweight rankings, above Anabel Ortiz.
Saturday presents another big night in women’s boxing as one undisputed title is on the line and another unification fight is happening a continent away.
In Texas on Saturday night, undisputed featherweight champion Amanda Serrano (44-2-1, 30 KO) — the No. 1 fighter in the division — takes on her lifelong friend from Brooklyn, New York, Heather Hardy (24-2, 4 KO) in a rematch of their WBO featherweight title fight in New York in 2019.
Serrano won that fight and it helped launch her career toward undisputed status. Now, they’ll fight again as the co-feature on the Jake Paul-Nate Diaz pay-per-view card (ESPN+ PPV) in what is likely to be another entertaining fight by two high-volume punchers.
On the same card, ESPN’s No. 2 super middleweight, Shadasia Green (12-0, 11 KO), will take on the No. 4 middleweight, Olivia Curry (7-1, 2 KO), and if Green wins there could be a chance for her to face the undisputed super middleweight champion, Savannah Marshall, in the near future.
In Kobe, Japan, WBA atomweight champion Montserrat Alarcon, ESPN’s No. 1 fighter in the division, will fight Yuko Kuroki, the No. 4 atomweight and WBO champion. It’s the first title defense for Kuroki (21-7-2, 9 KO), who beat Nanae Suzuki in March to win the belt. This will be the fourth title defense for Alarcon (18-4-2), who last fought in September 2022 when she beat Brenda Balderas Martinez.
In Atlanta, former Olympian Oshae Jones (3-0) takes on Miranda Barber (3-4, 1 KO) in a 6-round junior middleweight fight and in Baltimore, prospect Mia Ellis (6-1, 5 KO) fights Jessica Emerick (1-1-1, 1 KO) in a six-round junior featherweight bout.
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
