We all have spats with our neighbours, but one angry renter is shocked that they are being charged for smashing their neighbours doors, even though they left a ladder resting on their window
A disgruntled renter has been left puzzled as they have been told to pay for damages that were made due to negligence of their neighbour.
We're more than familiar with nightmare neighbour stories – usually to do with parking spaces, noise complaints and delivery dramas, but for this person. they don't know how to handle being charged for damages after their neighbour propped a ladder against their window, leading to it falling over and smashing their own doors.
Desperate for some advice on whether they should cough up and pay, the tenant has asked online who should be footing the bill as their neighbour says they 'have a right to store the ladder in their garden' and isn't sure how to handle the situation.
Taking to Reddit to get some thoughts the unnamed user wrote: "One of our windows overlooks the neighbour's garden. For some reason they had a ladder there propping up against our window.
"I could see something there through the glass (like stained or blurred glass) but wasn't sure what it was. I pushed open our window and it hit their ladder and fell back and smashed one of their doors
"They are now trying to get me to pay. Saying they have a right to store a ladder in their garden.
"My argument is that they should not put a ladder resting against my house and especially not blocking one of our windows.
"All I did was open a window, and surely I have a right to the small space where my window opens, despite it being in their garden. I am renting FYI."
Other Reddit users were quick to jump in and support the tenant and join their side with one person saying: "The response is to politely tell them that they can store their ladder wherever they want, but it is their responsibility to ensure it is stored safely and damage stemming from inappropriate storage is their issue.
Meanwhile, another suggests: "Legal counsel is not required. Inform them to quit being obnoxious and store their ladder correctly the next time."
While someone else commented: "So their ladder stored in their garden damaged their property and they think you're responsible…They will have a hard time glossing over the ways they are responsible."
Whereas various other users tell the renter it is not their fault and not to pay.
