'My thoughtful gesture meant my sister's car was stolen – she's furious with me' – The Mirror
A sibling’s attempt to help prevent their sister from having to replace her keys every time she loses them truly backfired when her car was stolen – and now she is being branded ‘dumb’
Sometimes, even when we do things with the very best intentions, it can end up backfiring in our faces. One person really learned this lesson the hard way when they had what they thought was a brilliant idea to stop their sister from having to replace her keys every time she lost them.
However, the plan completely backfired and ended with the sister being furious when her car ended up stolen. Taking to Reddit, the anonymous person explained that their little sister, who is 21, constantly loses her things – but particularly her keys.
In a recent post, the anonymous user explained that she mostly loses them around the house, but "at least 50 times since she's been driving she's lost them in public" and "a few times have been really scary because she got herself stranded".
It's also ended up costing the sister a lot of money, because she has to get the locks replaced. In the post, the sibling continued: "Last Friday she lost them again in a grocery but was lucky enough that the cashier found her and gave them back as she was frantic in the store. So I had a little tag made up that had her name, phone number and address so she wouldn't have to go through replacing them again."
However, earlier in the week the sister went to an amusement park for the day and "truly, truly lost her keys". The forum user continued: "When she got home her car was gone. Yesterday the police found her car but completely chopped with the key in the ignition (but her house and work keys were gone). I hope it's obvious what the police think happened.
"She's furious with me and my parents are mad as well saying I should have minded my own business. She knew the little tag was there and she even thought it was a good idea."
Fellow Redditors were pretty much unified that although the sibling had good intentions, the main mistake was putting the sister's address on the tag. One person said: "You had a good idea – to tag the keys. Then a terrible idea – add the address to the tag. That was dumb, but neither you nor your sister realised that at the time."
Another added: "What were you thinking? You can put a name, telephone number and maybe email there, but the address? Holy cow."
A third commented: "You put her name and address on the keys. Are you trying to manifest trouble for her? Holy s**t. Don't do that. Ever again. Wtf. Get an Air tag or another GPS tracker for her keys. Something that won't make her an easier target to victimise."
