A woman has said she’s confused by her friend’s baffling choice of baby name, as she wants to name her future child after a kitchen cupboard item commonly used to store food
Inspiration for baby names can come from all sorts of places – be it nature, film, music, or someone in your life that you want to honour such as a grandparent. But one woman was left baffled when her friend told her the name she's planning on giving her future child, as the name takes inspiration from a kitchen utensil.
The woman said her friend has found a name she thinks is a "cute gender-neutral name" that will work whether her baby is a boy or a girl, but isn't sure the mum-to-be has fully thought her plan through. The expectant mum wants to name her baby Tupper – and all her friend can think about is Tupperware, the food storage box brand many of us have in our kitchen cupboards.
In a post on Reddit, the woman said: "She wants to name them Tupper. Like Tupperware. I have tried so hard to tell her NOT TO but she is firm!! She's decided it's a cute gender-neutral name. Am I in the wrong? Is it cute?"
Commenters on the post were equally as baffled about the baby name her friend has chosen, with some saying the name would be suitable if she was picking a moniker for a dog, but not for a human. Others pointed out there were a series of "unflattering" nicknames that could be derived from the name Tupper, which could end with the poor child being picked on by their peers at school.
One person wrote: "Tubby, Tupperware, tuppence, oh I just looked it up and other than being a last name mostly, most meanings are extremely unflattering," while a second added: "Chris/Christopher could be a good alternative. Chris can be gender-neutral, and Christopher can be shortened to Topher, although personally, I think Topher is also a goofy name."
A third told the woman: "It is not a cute gender-neutral name. Inexplicably my brain auto-routed it to be a male dog's name. Maybe a cute nickname for a kid whose baby sibling can't quite pronounce 'Tucker' yet, but that's about it for people. Maybe a misplaced surname, but probably not something for a human first name that they will have to put on legal documents. I can't imagine being named Tupper and having to go to school like that. I know for a fact that everyone would dunk on that name."
Some commenters did their best to offer alternative names that had a similar feel to Tupper, including Tucker, while someone else joked that: "If she has a second she can name them Pyrex."
