Fiendishly difficult quiz show question stumps viewers – as some brand it a 'nightmare' – The Mirror
A tricky question from quiz show Only Connect has left viewers stumped as they struggle to work out the answer – with some even branding it a ‘nightmare’ to solve
Of all the quiz shows that grace our TV screens every evening, BBC's Only Connect has a reputation for being one of the hardest out there, with many finding the questions baffling and confusing. The premise appears simple enough as players have to find connections between seemingly unrelated clues, but the hints can sometimes leave viewers with a headache as they try to find the thing that links them all together.
And there's one question that has been deemed one of the hardest of them all, as viewers took to social media to argue it was a "nightmare" to try and solve. The question was first presented on the show back in 2021, and shocked audiences as it was the first question to be asked during the episode – leaving the contestants no chance to warm up with an easy one.
Show host Victoria Coren-Mitchell left fans and contestants baffled as she presented the first of the four clues, which appeared to be a sentence written in Russian, which the vast majority of those watching at home couldn't translate. Then, two more clues appeared in other languages that were equally as difficult to decipher.
The last clue was in English and was supposed to give contestants a better hint about what linked the four pieces together, but people were still stumped as the clue simply read: "Quiz which Elaine read this year."
Even with the final clue, neither of the teams of contestants was able to work out the connection between the four pieces of information, meaning Victoria had to explain what the clues were supposed to point to. The answer? Each word in each sentence starts with a letter that can be found on the top row of a keyboard in each of the languages.
Victoria revealed: "It's a keyboard question. The question writer here has come up with some sentences – I'm not sure they all make perfect sense in the individual languages – but they begin with the letters across the top of the keyboard as they appear in their different countries."
And even with the explanation, viewers at home were still confused, as many branded the question a "brute" – especially as the first one of the episode. One person wrote: "I see #onlyconnect is going to be a nightmare tonight with the first question!," and another added: "Wow – they started with a brute!," and a third exasperated viewer posted: "International keyboard, are you kidding me?"
