'I gave my son a classic name but people still can't spell it right – I'm dumbfounded' – The Mirror
A mum has been left ‘dumfounded’ after she gave her son a timeless name that she thought would be easy to pronounce and spell – but a number of people still can’t seem to get it right
When it comes to naming a baby, some of us love going for unique monikers that set them apart from other children, while others prefer to stick to the traditional and classic names that have been popular for generations. After all, there's no right or wrong way to name your child and it's all down to personal preference.
But one mum has been left feeling "dumbfounded" after she gave her son a "recognisable name" because she wanted to make sure he'd have no issues with people mispronouncing it or spelling it incorrectly – as people still struggle with it. She explained she named her son Isaac and "loved" the idea of him not having to spell it for people all the time, but has found that a lot of people in her life keep spelling it "Issac" instead.
Posting a "word of warning" to other parents on Reddit, she said: "I thought I named my child a very classic, recognisable name with a typical spelling. However, I'm dumbfounded by how often people misspell his name as ISSAC.
"I loved the idea of him not having to spell his name everywhere (I have a much less common name and hate having to spell it for people constantly). So many people have misspelt it though – from some of my friends to his babysitter to a doctor (?!), and even the person who made his birthday cake spelt it incorrectly on the cake! I see the incorrect spelling so often it's about 50/50 between getting Isaac and Issac. It has happened so often that I feel like I'm the crazy one for spelling it Isaac! All this to say, I love the name, but I do think he will be spelling it out for people for the rest of his life."
Commenters on the post were equally baffled by people's inability to spell the name, although many of them said they've also had experiences with people being unable to spell fairly simple monikers. One person said: "Don't think too much about it, I used to tell people my name is Sarah with an H, and people would put the H everywhere! Shara, Sahra, Sarha. I was about 16 when I just started spelling it out."
While another said: "My husband's name is Isaac and before I opened the post I knew what your warning was going to be. He used to screenshot all the incorrect spellings in email correspondence at his work. I think he gave up a while ago," and a third posted: "People see what they want to see, and it's infuriating! My colleague Ernie was constantly – and I mean daily – called Eric on emails!? My girl Rosa is always being called Rose or Rosie, and often people ignore my loud corrections!"
