'I'm a hairdresser and there's client habits we all secretly hate – one is so gross' – The Mirror
Nobody wants to get on the wrong side of their hairdresser, but it turns out you might have accidentally annoyed a pro by making one of several little-known mistakes
If you've ever turned up to the hair salon late, sick, or with dirty hair, we've got news for you. Although you may have had a very good reason, it's likely you annoyed your stylist, as these are just a few of the faux-pas a professional says her colleagues hate.
While you might have figured out a few on your own – nobody wants to share a salon with a sneezing client – others may come as a surprise. In particular, her advice not to arrive for a colour with dirty hair will shock some, as hairdressers recommended this once upon a time.
Thankfully, @telesabrown is here to set the record straight, as she did in a TikTok video, which covered clients' bad behaviour. The hairstylist, hair educator, and content creator exposed all in a video dubbed: "5 things that hairstylists secretly hate that you do."
As previously mentioned, the pro doesn't advise clients to show up to a colour appointment with dirty hair. "I understand for years hairstylists were telling you to do this. It's not your fault, but I'm here to correct it," she said. "Hair colour works better on clean hair, so for the best results come with clean hair. Also, it's gross."
Talking about results, it helps if you clearly explain the look you're after when you book your appointment. Exposing another faux-pas, Telesa railed against those who ask for "a completely different appointment" than the one they booked. Think, people who book for a haircut but ask for colour on the day, or book for highlights then want a colour correction. "This is so difficult. It's hard, especially being self-employed, to say no because usually they're big services that we want to do, but timing is different for every particular service," she explained. "Please reach out to your stylist in advance and typically they can figure it out to accommodate."
Talking of timing, you should try your best to arrive at your appointment on time. "We get that things happen, but, typically, a busy hairstylist has a full day of clients, and showing up more than five minutes late actually affects the rest of our day," said Telesa. As for "no shows", please remember your hairstylist could be losing out. "We don't make money with no-one our in our chair. Expect to be charged for this," the stylist warned.
However, she noted it's a whole different ball game if you're ill and can't attend. In fact, your hairdresser would rather you stayed at home, according to Telesa, who listed sick clients as another pet peeve.
"In this day and age, I can't believe this still happens," she noted. "Most people, myself included waive cancellation fees for being sick because we don't want it. I do not want to cancel a week's worth of clients just to get you in. I understand that usually most of you have waited, but please don't show up sick."
Finally, Telesa discussed clients who "say that nobody knows how to cut or colour your hair." "That's a big red flag because typically that means to me that probably no matter what I do you're not going to be happy," she explained. The pro added: "Of course, we try our hardest, and sometimes you've just had bad luck and hairstylists that don't do what you want, but I would say 99 per cent of the time you're the problem."
Replying to the video, which has racked up thousands of views, one commenter wrote: "Did not know that colour works on clean hair better. Thanks." A second agreed: "The clean hair surprises me too! I've always been told at least day 2 hair before a colour job." Someone else commented: "Many of the reasons I got out of hairstyling after 34yrs." "This lady is saying how we all feel, well done," another added.
