Mechanic warns drivers not to drive with car windows down – as it could cost you – The Mirror
Automotive engineer Josh Regis shared his advice to car owners. The car mechanic revealed why you should stop driving with your windows down – and you’ll be surprised.
When driving on stinking hot days it's only natural to want to wind your window down in hopes of a nice cool breeze – especially if your car doesn't have the luxury of aircon. But one mechanic has revealed exactly why you should avoid doing so, especially if you're keen to save money.
The average driver reportedly spends around £220 each month just to maintain their vehicle so it's understandable that car owners will want to cut costs when they can. And while many believe driving with the windows down isn't doing any harm, it turns out this isn't always the case.
Automotive engineer Josh Regis, 34, who has spent 18 years as a mechanic, recently explained to The Sun why he thinks drivers shouldn't drive with the window down, claiming it could cost them. He said: "When the window is down, you're using more gas because you are forcing your vehicle to work harder against wind resistance.
"Your car works harder by burning more fuel to maintain the same speed. If you used your air conditioning, your vehicle will run at the same speed so it burns less fuel." He went on to explain that he's done scientific experiments to prove that it's more energy efficient to use your air conditioning. However, it's important to note how much more fuel you use and how much resistance is created will depend on the type of car you're driving and how fast you're going.
On the flip side, during winter people often think they need to warm their car before they drive but this isn't necessary. "It's actually better to turn it on for five seconds and then drive off straight away because you are bringing the car to its optimal running temperature more quickly than if you leave it to sit there to warm up," Josh explained. According to him, the idea that you should warm up your car before driving originated with the introduction of carburettors, which needed heating up to be more efficient.
