Weird news recap, Nov. 17-24 – CTPost

It’s a weird world out there. Here are some of the quirky news stories of the past week.
 
‘Black seadevil’ caught on camera
A never-before-seen animal was caught on camera on a dive off the coast of California.
The elusive anglerfish, also known as the “black seadevil,” was found nearly 2,000 feet below the ocean’s surface accorfing to WPIX News. The fish has a light on the top of its head and “looks like something a mad scientist put together.”

Is Winnie the Pooh a hermaphrodite?
Officials in a Polish town have opposed a proposition to name a playground after Winnie-the-Pooh due to the bear’s unclear gender and immodest clothing.
The matter was debated in a closed-door meeting weeks ago in the central Polish town of Tuszyn, but didn’t get much media attention in Poland until recent days.
Voice recordings of the meeting were leaked to the media in which officials complained that Pooh Bear is immodestly dressed and also lacks a clear gender. One called the bear a “hermaphrodite.”

Odor-eating toilet seat unveiled
Kohler Co. has introduced a deodorizing toilet seat that it says eliminates embarrassing bathroom odors and the need for candles and sprays to cover them up.
A fan hidden in the battery-operated seat sucks in air and pushes it through an odor-eating carbon filter, followed by an optional scent pack. Product manager Jerry Bougher said the idea is to attack smells “where the action is.” The seat costs $90.

Flushed diamond ring recovered
In other toilet news, Sanitation workers have returned an heirloom diamond and sapphire ring to a San Francisco Bay Area family whose 3-year-old son flushed it down the toilet.
After several attempts, Union Sanitary District crews found the ring last week, about a month and a half after it disappeared from Munazzar and Mehvish Tapal’s home in Union City.

Kitten makes a 2,300-mile trek
A diamond ring wasn’t the only missing thing found this week. Spice the kitten, who went missing in New Mexico, was located by her owner this week in Maine. How the feline made the 2,300-mile trip remains a mystery.
Spice was turned into the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook earlier this month by a man who found her inside a duffel bag outside a Portland thrift store.
Her owner was tracked though an implanted microchip to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Jennifer Brown of the Animal Refuge League tells the Portland Press Herald she talked to the owner, who said Spice bolted on Halloween when she opened her door for trick-or-treaters.

UMaine doesn’t wear enough plaid
Fans at the University of Main sure do like plaid–but not enough to break a world record.
The university had called on football fans to don plaid or tartan-patterned clothing for Saturday’s game against the University of New Hampshire. It even gave out 1,500 plaid bandanas to attendees. The school needed more than 1,090 people wearing two plaid-patterned items to attend the game to break the Guinness world record. Instead, only about 1,000 turned out.
