TUSCARAWAS TWP. – A horse was killed after being struck by a vehicle on U.S. Route 30 early Sunday morning, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
The crash occurred after three horses got loose in western Stark County. Two of the animals were caught.
The incident began at 3:47 a.m. when troopers responded to a one-car crash involving a horse, Sgt. Bridget Matt said.
The investigation revealed that a 2015 Ford Focus was westbound on Route 30 when it struck one of the horses that was running in the roadway. The collision happened after the driver tried to take evasive action to avoid hitting them. The horse that was struck died as a result of the crash, which occurred just west of Pigeon Run Avenue.

The driver of the Focus, a 40-year-old Creston man, was uninjured.
The loose horses were black, standardbred horses that were stabled at the home of their owner. Matt said it is unclear how the horses got loose.
The crash remains under investigation.
Troopers found the other horses at the crash scene, but the animals ran north on state Route 21. Troopers attempted to follow the horses but lost sight of them near Lake Avenue and Earl Road in Massillon.
The two remaining horses were found by Copper Horse Crusade of Tuscarawas Township with assistance by the Massillon Police Department.
Flesher’s Deadstock Removal of Norton assisted with the removal and disposal of the dead horse.
Correction: The car that hit the horse was a Ford Focus, not a Fiesta. Wrong information was provided when the story was published.
