People say their 'life is a lie' after realising they've been using chopsticks wrong – The Mirror
People have only just realised they’ve been using chopsticks incorrectly their entire lives – and the right way means you never have to rest your chopsticks on the table
Chopsticks can take a lot of getting used to if you've never used them before.
If you've ever ordered a Chinese takeaway or other Asian cuisine and been sent a pair of single-use wooden chopsticks with your order, you might have tried to give them a go. But if you've spent your whole life using other eating utensils such as a knife and fork, they can be quite tricky to get to grips with. And even if you think you've mastered handling chopsticks, experts have claimed you're probably still doing it wrong – as the right way should eliminate the need to rest them on the table.
Today (February 6th) is National Chopsticks Day, and to celebrate, we're sharing the game-changing secret that will make sure you always use your chopsticks the right way, as reported by the creative network website Behance.
Now, this tip has little to do with how you hold your chopsticks and is more about how to treat them when you first open up the little packet that comes with your takeaway. Disposable wooden chopsticks often come held together with a larger block of wood at the end, and most people think they should break the chopsticks apart down the middle of that block.
But that piece of wood can actually provide a little rest for your chopsticks so that they don't touch the table. To make it work, break off the tab at the top instead of down the middle, and place the block on the table. Then, when you want to put your chopsticks down, you can rest the end that has been in your food on the little block.
A description on the Behance website reads: "The separated end is designed for keeping the [chopstick] untouched to the table [in the hope that] the user [can] reuse the same [chopstick] again."
Be warned, however, that not all chopsticks come with the little block connecting them, so you won't be able to do this with every pair of chopsticks you come across – but it's something to look out for next time you order a takeaway.
