A 2024 forecast by way of asparagus, a treasure hunter who saw his search for gold go wildly awry, and a stolen weathervane returned after almost 25 years were among the weird and wondrous stories to cross our desk this past week.
As has become tradition at the start of each new year, British psychic Jemima Packington, who uses asparagus to predict the future, issued her annual forecast. While many of her prognostications were somewhat vague and centered around trends, she did put forward a pair of specific events that will undoubtedly bolster her mystical reputation should they come to fruition in 2024. To that, the Asparamancer says that the United States will have a female president and it will not be Vice President Kamala Harris, which seems to suggest a Nikki Haley victory in November. Additionally, Packington predicted that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will separate later this year.
A treasure hunter looking for gold in California made headlines this past week when he wound up stranded in the wilderness for a harrowing four days. Believing that there is an enormous cache of riches hidden in the Los Padres National Forest, Brent Lendriet set off in search of the spoils said to have been stashed by a Franciscan monk back in the 1800s. However, his quest quickly took a detour when his truck wound up flooded and then stuck in a remote location, leaving him fighting for his life in the face of freezing temperatures. Fortunately, Lendriet was eventually saved by authorities and celebrated his good fortune with ribeye steaks for himself and his dog, who was by his side throughout the misadventure.
In what one hopes is a good omen for 2024, this week saw a longstanding mystery solved as a golden weathervane stolen from a French community was returned by the remorseful thief who took it nearly 25 years ago. The pilfered piece vanished from the village of Bessan back in April of 1999 and, since that time, speculation swirled around the strange caper with many wondering who took the weathervane and where it ultimately went. Those questions have now been largely answered as the unnamed individual who made off with the piece mailed it back to a local historian and, upon being tracked down by police, explained that he stole the object during a night of drunken revelry and, later ashamed of what he had done, hid the weathervane in his basement until he recently noticed it and decided to return it to the community.
