A former US Secret Service Special Agent who helped provide security during the Clinton, Bush, and Obama administrations says she’s convinced that the White House is haunted.
Evy Poumpouras was part of the presidential close protection detail for president Barack Obama, and spent years at the iconic 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue mansion, guarding against potential threats.
But the scariest things she encountered, she says, were not terrorists but spooks. She says that the domestic staff, some of whom had served in the White House for decades, told her about the building’s supernatural history.

Evy told podcaster Mike Ritland: “They would tell me when I worked midnight shift ‘Oh yeah, there's ghosts down that way.’ They’d say ‘Don't you hear the keys at night?’ and I’d say ‘Yes and they’d say that's the ghost’.”
Several spirits are said to haunt the iconic building, most notably Abraham Lincoln. First lady Grace Coolidge claimed to have seen the assassinated leader looking out of the window of what had been in his office. No less a figure than Winston Churchill said he had once been surprised by the Civil War president just as he was stepping naked out of his bath.
“Good evening, Mr. President,” Churchill reportedly said. “You seem to have me at a disadvantage.”
“They say Lincoln always comes back whenever he feels the country is in need or in peril,” added ghost hunter Jared Broach. “They say he just strides up and down the second-floor hallways and raps on doors and stands by windows.”
But Evy said that even though she frequently heard phantom voices and unexplained footsteps in the White House while she was working as part of President Obama’s security detail, she never told anyone about her supernatural encounters. “I wanted to keep my job,” she laughed.
Some of the spooky feelings can be put down to the sheer weight of history. She added: “There were times when we’d go to the state floor at night, when were were doing our rotations.
"There’s a picture of Kennedy, where he's looking down – there were moments when you'd walk by and you’d just get chills.
“The house is quiet and it's a museum. It's huge and there's moments where you you would have those kind of powerful gravity moments. It’s a little scary too sometimes."
